This process itself began 3-4 years ago. So it's got nothing to do with who moved to the West. The whole point is to include people whose origins are not in the West, to bring diversity. Alia is a young, emerging leading actress in India and it makes sense to pick her name.

But there isn't much to read here. It's not some major achievement.

The Academy has 9,921 members as of now. There are lots of desis that were invited from the last few years but we don't know if they accepted or not. You can apply yourself also as long as you have feature film credits.

There are 17 branches and each member can only vote in their own category. So actors can only vote in the acting categories and so on. Everyone gets to vote for Best Picture.

It's not a big deal but the chances increase to get more non-white nominations and winners if there are more foreign people in the Academy. Block voting would also help but I don't think desis have that much unity or interest.
