Akki can do that. He would just calculate money... usko audience ke experience se koi lena dena nahin. If the OTT platform offers him 100cr... then it's a 200cr earner on theater.

If it premieres on TV later he'd make more money.

Theatrical releases still exist because the returns on high budget films are higher than selling them to streaming. You discard it to streaming, when you are convinced it will flop and want to cover your costs. If he dumps it on streaming for 100 Cr, it won't go to tv. Probably is a train wreck.

What if he's just taking a risk. He knows this is a mass puller, if the trailer makes many people subscribe to that platform and gets great WOM, he would be the pioneer... upar se he might also release it in theaters with the social distancing thing. Chaaro taraf se paise.

With the social distancing thing in theaters any big budget film will earn 1/4 of its potential, and it will also put a dent in the image. But if he releases it on OTT, gets great WOM then releases it in theaters and earns 40cr from there then on TV... he would make more money than if he starts with theater release.

Mujhe toh lagta hai woh 70-80 cr mein bhi bech dega.

Idk sounds incredibly complicated. Theatres would be lucky to open before August-September. No one is watching a Eid ka film in August. (assuming the streaming platform releases it on Eid/June)

Neither Netflix or Prime will let him sell the movie to TV after they bought it. That goes against the entire model. HotStar will be the only one that will let the film switch between the streaming platform and their own tv channels. And I really don't think Disney will bite the bait right now.

If this goes to Netflix for 70-80 cr, it would be because either producers can't afford to block the money till theatres re-open or Akshay has no faith in this.
