Part One: The New Wife

Three days later

The fragrance of sandalwood suddenly overpowered the strong smelling smoke emanating from the dhoop lighted for the morning pooja. Trilochan Roy Chaudhary was busy ensuring that suitable values were instilled in the young daughter in law of the house. Ever since he had accepted this fact, albeit with greatest difficulty, he had taken it upon himself to make sure that the Roy Chaudhary's newest member was moulded appropriately to suit the royal blood of the clan.

Bondita, visibly struggling with the heavy thaal of pooja offerings, still managed to have a sweet smile on her face. Trilochan made no efforts whatsoever to ease her difficulty. It was all a part of his training, he thought with a firm resolve.

He found immense pleasure in guiding the bahurani about the rituals of the morning pooja. And Bondita, like a true disciple, noted everything mentally, as much as her already occupied and confused mind could register. She thought it was her only duty to obey all the commands given by her Kaka Sasurji. Afterall that was the only thing her mother had told her before she had left - always obey your in laws, no matter what.

She would get up early in the morning, it would take her a little less than an hour to drape the saree and then, while Aniruddh would still be peacefully sleeping in the bed, she would go straight to the temple for the morning pooja and report to Trilochan, sharp at 7AM.

“Diya jalao Bondita,” he said solemnly.

She looked on with her large black eyes staring straight into his brown spectacled ones. Flustered at his helplessness, he passed onto her, a lighted candle. She touched the flame to the diya and behold! It lit up with all its glory, not only the courtyard, but also Trilochan's heart. The diya’s flame wavered amidst the smoke of agarbatti, but still, was confident and strong.

“Babuji, Saudaminiji aayi hain,” announced Bihari amidst the mantra recital.

“Unko guest room mein bithao aur mithai paroso. Main aata hoon."

“Jai Maa Durga!” he bowed his head in respect, to the idol and left.

"Binoy Babu ke aane ka toh intezaar kar lijiye Babuji,” Bihari uttered hesitantly, as Trilochan walked towards the guest room.

One stern look from him was enough to seal the servant’s thoughts, abruptly.

“Damini,” he said sweetly, upon entering the room. She bowed low to touch his feet and he softly touched her head in return.

“Beta, tumse ab main kaise kahoon…,” Trilochan felt ashamed to even mention the incident.

“Mujhe pata hai Kaka babu,” she replied immediately to avoid embarrassing him further.

“Ek upkaar kardo mujhpar Saudamini, iss ghar mein bahu bankar aa jao.” he pleaded helplessly. “Karlo Aniruddh se vivah."

Saudamini was taken aback.

“Kaka!” shouted Aniruddh, as he slammed open the door.

“Aniruddh tujhe meri kasam. Ab aur zulm mat kar iss parivaar par, aur chup ho ja!”

Turning to Saudamini, he continued his prayer,

“Beta, mujhpar daya karo aur Roy Chaudharys ko jeevan bhar ke bhayankar paap se bachalo!”

“Durga Maa ki saugandh, tumhein Rani banakar rakhenge. Bondita se tumhaara maan aur pad hamesha ucha rahega…”

He thrusted the house keys in her delicate hands, which were freshly decorated with aalta. She was stunned.

“Kaka yeh aap kya kar rahe hain? Bondita ke hote hue ab main doosra vivah karoon? Usse aapki iss shaan ko haani nahi hogi?”

“Baksh de mujhe! Tumne jo kiya, woh hum sabne maana. Roy Chaudharys ne Bondita ko maana - iss ghar ki bahu. Ab mujhe jo karna hai, woh karne de. Aur tujhe manna padega!”

“Dekhiye aap Mini ko. Kya aap ise sazaa nahi de rahein hain?”

A tear escaped her eyes.

“Itne bade khandaan mein use izzat dekar laa raha hoon, ismein sazaa kya hai?”

“Agar yeh nahi hua toh ghar ko kaun sambhalega? Bondita?” he mocked.

Saudamini was surprised. Was the new wife so incapable and worthless?

“Damini, dekh bitiya, tere liye maine sone ke kangan aur yeh jhumke banvayein hain...”

“Toh kya aap sirf iss ghar ke liye Saudamini aur mujhe… main.. Bondita ko…” he mumbled, embarrased and guilty.

“Kaka Babu” Saudamini asserted to prevent Aniruddh from speaking.

She walked out of the room and kept the keys in front of the idol. After bowing down, she got up.

Saudamini touched Trilochan's feet and turned away. Aniruddh smiled in relief and pain alike while Trilochan felt slightly offended.

She had hardly walked a few steps when she felt a tug at her pallu from behind. Alarmed, she turned around to see a little girl, dressed up as a suhagann. Tears after tears rolled from her eyes, as she realised who was the woman she had cursed, all this while.

“Didi? Mat jayiye na.” Bondita said lovingly, pulling her saree.

Bondita could clearly see the reflection of Sampoorna in the saree clad woman standing in front of her.

“Pati babu ne khoob bataya hai aapke baare mein. Aap kitni sundar ho aur aapko sab aata hai. Aur aapke baal bhi lambe hain!”

Aniruddh and Saudamini both couldn’t meet each other’s eye.

“Dekho, Saudamini. Main abhi Kashi ke liye nikal raha hoon. Iss paap ke praischit ke liye pata nahi kitne yagya aur havan karvaane padenge. Main 21 din baad aaunga, tab tak apna jawaab taiyyar rakhna.”

Trilochan left the courtyard, not before affectionately patting her head again.

“Bondita, chalo” Aniruddh said, trying to divert her mind from Saudamini.

She pulled Saudamini along and the latter couldn’t help but follow the young child.

Astonished, Aniruddh looked at her with questions in his eyes. Was she…? His heart skipped a beat. Saudamini halted her steps.

“Maaf karna Vakeel Babu, par main aapke jitni mahaan nahi.”

“Mujhe kisiki doosri patni banna sweekar nahi.” She momentarily looked at Aniruddh with eyes full of complaints and drew her pallu over her head and eyes.

"Kshama.”

She folded her hands and left, with uncontrollable tears. Never had she thought would come this day, that she would say no to Aniruddh.

He took a deep breath, as he soaked in those words.

Doosri patni. Precisely why he didn’t want to have this conversation.

I'm so glad Mini refused to be the second wife. She deserves better in life (in this story of course).

My most favourite scene would be Bondita holding Mini's pallu and looking at her like her elder sister. That moved me a lot.❤️ Mahi, thank you. This was a much needed story. I'm really looking forward to the next part.

Ani was astonished hearing his kaka, thank God he doesn't want to leave his wife for any sake.

Surprisingly I'm liking mini here, loved the way she denied to be his second wife "this is called self respect".

Ani share his feelings to his wife "bon" about mini 😊 that's a good start of relationship 😳
