Hii! hope you all still remember me.. This OS came to me all of a sudden . I was listening to this song and suddenly an urge to write this OS came to me. It is not checked, not edited.. It came from my heart and i hope it will reach yours!!
That Afternoon...
The door creaked slightly as the couple entered. Smiling at the guard who held the door open for them, they crossed the threshold and entered the big dazzling interiors of the Almeida Café. A table was already booked for them and the manager himself escorted them to it.
He watched everything from his table which was two tables away from theirs. His attention was arrested from the time her laughter reached him. Even after nine years of separation, he couldn’t forget the tinkling laughter that used to wake him up from sleep. Her phone calls, which acted as alarm during their college days, religiously contained her laughter in them. After all she was like that only. Laughing and smiling her way out of every problem like it was not at all a big deal.
Subah subah ka khyaal aaj
Wapas gokul chal mathura raaj
Mathura nagarpati kaahe tum gokul jao?
(An early morning thought
The Lord of Mathura must go back to Gokul
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?)
He noted with interest that that trait of hers has still not changed. Her laughter still contained the same traits. Her eyes still twinkled when her lips parted in awe of something. The silky mane which he so loved to caress were still kept open for the breeze to play with. However, there was just one difference. All those things were now for the handsome man sitting opposite her.
Manohar vesh chhod nand raaj
Sar se utaarke sundar taaj
Raj dand chhod bhumi par vaaj
Phir kaahe baansuri bajaao…?
Mathura nagarpati kaahe tum gokul jaao?
(Leaving behind such splendor, oh son of Nand
Putting away your beautiful crown
Giving up your specter that rules the land
Why do you again play the flute?
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?)
He remembered the last time they met eight years earlier. She had cried then. However the circumstances were different then. She cried out of the pain of separation she felt on being separated from her family by her marriage. The marriage she had chosen to keep her family happy. Their relationship was doomed from its first blush. He realized it with a new force now.
Kaun sa anokha geet gahe pee kakool?
Raj path jaise aaj bhai dhool
Kaun sa anokha geet gahe pee kakool?
Birhan laage phir hridaya akool
Raj kaaj man na lagaao…
Mathura nagarpati kahe tum Gokul jaao?
(What quaint song do the birds sing?
That makes you give up your kingdom like it is dust
What quaint song do the birds sing?
That again harmonizes to your heart the woman you left behind
That has taken your mind off your kingdom
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?)
Why did it hurt so much then? They knew from the start that their religious differences would surely play a big hindrance to their love. However, what he didn’t know then was that she would be so easily persuaded into forgetting him. He didn’t know then that the love he was willing to fight for was never meant to be his. That she would leave his side when her parents would want her to. He remembered his grandmother’s words about time. She used to say that time was the greatest healer of all. Then why did time fail to reduce his pain? Why did time fail to remove her from his memory? Why the pain of seeing her after so long did affect him so much?
Tumhari priya ab puri gharvaali
Doodh navan ghivoo din bhar khaali
Biraha ke aansoon kab ke ponch daali
Phir kaahe dard jagaao…?
Mathura nagarpati kahe tum Gokul jaao?
(The girl you loved is now married
Milk cream ghee is all she does the whole day
She wiped away the tears of separation long back
Why do you evoke that pain again?
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?)
He looked at her again. She had still not seen him. She was still busy laughing with her husband. Smiling in his eyes, laughing at his jokes, holding his hands they looked a perfect pair in his eyes. Why was he pushing himself into that oblivion of pain? Was it required? His heart asked questions. It wanted answers which only she could provide but still he couldn’t get himself to go up to her table and ask her. Why? What was he afraid of? He didn’t know.
Pur naari saari vyakul nayan
Kusum sajja lage kantak shayan
Poor naari saari vyakul nayan
Raat bhar madhav jaagat bechain
Kaahe aadhi raat saarathi bulaayo…?
Mathura nagarpati kahe tum Gokul jaao?
(All the women of city have anxious eyes
Flower strewn bed seems like a bed of thorns
All the women of city have anxious eyes
Madhav (You) keep awake all night uneasy
Why do you call the chariot driver at midnight?
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?)
He felt her image waver a bit in front of his eyes. Then slowly the image became a bit hazy. With a start he realized that his eyes had started to water. The room felt hot even with all the air conditioners working.Hastily calling the waiter he asked him to bring the bill. It was not safe to linger in her presence any more. He realized that he would have to leave before his self control snapped. Creating a scene in front of so many people would not profit him or her in any way. The best was to leave the café as soon as possible.
Dheere dheere pahunchat jamuna ke teer
Sunsaan panghat mridul sameer
Dheere dheere pahunchat jamuna ke teer
Khan khan madhav birha madeer
Use kaahe bhool na paao…?
Mathura nagarpati kahe tum Gokul jaao?
(Slowly reaching the banks of Yamuna
The river side is deserted, the wind blows sweetly
Slowly reaching the banks of Yamuna
The sound of khan khan (of her ornaments) isheard, separation is your wine
Why cant you forget her?
Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?)
Paying the bill he came out on the road. Taking a good look at her for the last time he set foot on the road. The hot sunny afternoon suddenly felt cooler than the air conditionered café . Calling an auto he got up on it. The questions would have to wait. The answers he was so eager to know would have to wait for another day. When that day would come he did not know but he was willing to wait. He was always willing to wait when it came to her. And he would wait till eternity for her…
Mathura nagarpati kahe tum Gokul jaao?
(Oh Lord of Mathura why do you go to Gokul?)
