Kangana Ranaut has revisited the controversy surrounding Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement for jewellery brand GIVA, clarifying that her objection was never simply about the actor’s outfit. In a recent interview, Kangana said the bralette was only a small part of what bothered her. According to the BJP MP, her larger concern was the way the festival and its cultural traditions were presented in the campaign.
Kangana Says The Outfit Was Only A Minor Issue
The controversy erupted after GIVA released a 36-second Raksha Bandhan advertisement featuring Kriti in an ivory bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt. The actor was shown tying rakhi to her brother and her pet dog, with the campaign highlighting the idea that pets are also part of the family.
The advertisement quickly divided social media users, with criticism aimed at both Kriti’s styling and the presentation of the festival. Kangana had initially taken aim at the outfit on Instagram Stories, questioning why Kriti would wear what she described as bikini or underwear-style clothing while tying rakhi to her brother. However, speaking on Decode Live, Kangana now insisted that clothing was not the central issue for her.
‘Where Are The Parents?’ Kangana Questions Festival Imagery
Kangana said women are free to wear whatever they want during festivals and stressed that the bralette was merely a “minor detail”. Her bigger complaint was that the advertisement did not include elements she associates with a traditional Raksha Bandhan celebration.
She pointed to the absence of a home setting, parents and familiar festive details such as halwa-puri, tilak, akshat, incense, diya and religious imagery. Kangana argued that rituals and visual traditions are an important part of how a festival’s cultural identity is communicated.
She also maintained that the tilak and other customary practices cannot simply be removed while still presenting the celebration as Raksha Bandhan.
GIVA Pulls Down The Ad After Backlash
Following the online uproar, GIVA removed the advertisement from its platforms. The jewellery brand later explained that the campaign was intended to celebrate pets as members of the family and said it respects Indian festivals and traditions.
Kangana’s latest comments therefore shift the focus of the controversy from Kriti’s clothes to a wider debate around cultural representation. While her original post appeared to centre heavily on the actor’s styling, she has now made it clear that, for her, the bigger question was whether the advertisement reflected the traditional spirit and visual language of Raksha Bandhan.
