Lavanya is such a lovely foil for Khushi. Their conversation was a delight to read.

Now will Arnav (hope it will be him!) aankh bhar ke dekho Khushi at the fest? And will he baat kar ke dekho at the Open Mic event? Waiting for my dil to get all paani paani at that ;)

PS - Devi maiya and Nandkishore's laakhon shukriyas to Sanjiv Saraf for Rekhta!

PPS - Thank you for the Coke studio recommendation. I enjoyed listening to it... can I confess I remain partial to Mehdi Hassan's rendition? :)

Of course, Mehdi Hassan's rendition is incomparable. I am on the same page as you. It's just that in this era of 'remixes', it's hard to come across covers which at least try to do justice to the original composition. I'm curious, how do you feel about Jagjit Singh's renditions of Ghalib's poetry?

Thank you so much for this beautiful comment.

(Oh and I absolutely agree. Sanjiv Saraf is the MVP of urdu poetry in today's age).

And now there are even remixes of songs where the existence of the original in the first place was baffling enough 😆

Jagjit Singh was an extremely accomplished artist and a master of his craft, it goes without saying, and I remain a fan, but I think the depth of feeling that Ghalib's words evoke touches each of us differently. And that is difficult to capture. I like his renditions of Ghalib's poetry... but I can't lose myself in it.

Okay, now you have me imagining the above in Sobti's husky voice, the one which wraps itself around the listener giving goosebumps galore when he says Khushi... yeh tumne kya kar diya mere saath WIANji...

Anything I would say now on the matter, would simply be an echo of what you just said. I am in absolute agreement. I hold Jagjit Singh in very high regard (and Koi Fariyaad will remain an all time favorite), but there's just something about Ghalib which makes a non-musical recital of his works sound more precious to the ears. Naseeruddin Shah in 'Ghalib' ,however, was irreproachable and will forever remain imprinted in my mind as the true face of the illustrious poet. Even his recitals of poetry throughout the drama perfectly encapsulated the essence of the verses.

I keep scourging the virtual universe for renditions that would do justice to the classics. Recently heard Surekha Sikri's recital of Faiz's Mujhse pehli si mohabbat - so good!

He does have the perfect husky, gravelly voice ideal for poetry. What a shame we didn't get to hear any of it. Imagine ASR reciting a classic, dressed in a bandhgala to go with it ;) (oops, spoiler alert! haha!)

I haven't watched Naseeruddin's Ghalib yet. Will rectify that soon! I just listened to Surekha Sikri's recital, thank you so much for that <3

Uff.

Husn-e-jaanaan ki tareef mumkin nahin. Aafreen aafreen!! ;)

Isse ek sher bhi yaad aaya-

Tum hanso toh din nikelin, chup raho, toh raatein hain,

Kis ka gham? Kahaan ka gham? sab fizool baatein hain

(Unable to recollect the poet's name atm)
