Depends on where he’s studied and which exams he’s passed.
If he has a royal college qualification (Mrcs/ frcs etc), he will be called Mr.

Well he did his MBBS and MS in India.I think he completed residency rotation but has not yet given his exit exam. He took off some time and probably working part time supporting his brother on BB

Just checked his insta bio.. says 'general surgeon'

So yeah he's still a surgeon, if he has any experience from the UK he won't use the Dr prefix.

Well he is not from UK he studied in India and practicing in India. So I think this prefix is irrelevant in this case

😆 I said experience in UK.. not whether he's from there..

Are you from the medical field? It will be easier to explain then.

So basically medical and surgical fields are two different things. Once you become a doctor i.e. complete a bachelor's degree (MBBS), you can decide to pursue either a medical or surgical field.

For example, a cardiologist is from the medical field while a cardiothoracic surgeon is from the surgical field.

In India and the US they do still use 'Dr' even for surgeons. But in other parts of the world mainly UK, the far east etc, surgeons will be called 'Mr' or 'Ms'.

BUT if someone has completed a residency/ masters in India or anywhere actually, and have either worked in the UK, or have obtained membership of the royal college of surgeons through an exam in the UK (which can be done outside UK as well. This means they have a license to practice there) then they are referred to as Mr or Ms as per UK guidelines.

So I'm guessing since Umar doesn't use the Dr prefix on any of his SM handles but does mention that he's a general surgeon, he either has the aforementioned qualifications OR

he just doesn't like to use it on SM lol

Source: Ironically, I'm a doctor, currently specialising in general surgery.

Hahaha never thought I'd be talking about this on the forum!

Well I am a doctor too and have been working in teaching hospitals in India. I don't like to put out this on online forums.

He is very smart and doesn’t wish to offer free online consultations and discounts for being familiar on a virtual space 😉😆

Surgeons drop the ‘Dr.’ prefix once they complete specialization.

But yeah not all doctors/ surgeons like to show off their credentials on social media, some of us like to live double lives 🙈

I’m curious, Did he do a surgical rotation in UK 😳

IMO if one is using SM professionally to network n as a means of enhancing their livelihood, they'll put out their professional details in their SM bios. But many use SM for other reasons n hence I guess they don't feel the necessity to mention their professional credentials. I also have a few friends on SM that r doctors, but they don't mention it.
