@TM, in general I have read this entire thread. And I partly agree and partly disagree with everyone. My personal opinion, which is already expressed by some-
1. Maya 1.0 was unique coz that was the first time they showed a woman so obsessed. The only other time this was explored was Saubhagyavati Bhava with KVB as Viraj Dobriyal. Portrayals were completely different. The idea started off at a similar point.
2. Maya 1.0 was also unique coz love has different forms of compassion, obsession, stubbornness, happiness, grief, anger, disappointment, longing, delusions, hope, despondence and hatred too. Maya 1.0 explored everything in the name of love. So it's too simplistic a classification of S1 as BeyHadh Pyaar and S2 as BeyHadh Nafrat. Coz hatred is dependent on love. And her hatred is dependent on love too.
3. She's saying her love found its limit in betrayal but her hatred that stems from it has no limit. However, Season 1 explored EVERY facet of love there is, and to a much greater extent coz there she was shown to have some psychological issues, which made it intriguing etc. Her psychological issues came to the fore throughout. Idk how they screwed up later.
4. She could kill and she did kill for her limitless love and obsession of Arjun, her love was boundary-less. So it made an interesting watch, because Maya 1's character arc was MUCH wider than Maya 2.0.
Now coming to Maya 2.0
1. They have based it on hatred. But hatred itself is the limit for any emotion. Once you reach the point of hatred, there is only so much you can do. The only thing left for her to do is destruction and murder, which is a more normal occurrence when one is filled with hatred, but a very rare occurrence when one is filled with love. Killing someone because you are in love with XYZ, and killing someone because you hate XYZ are completely different. The former, is beyhadh love, the latter need not necessarily be beyhadh because everyone filled with immense hatred has a higher tendency to reach that level to have murderous instincts. Therefore, the character arc for Maya 2.0 is pretty restricted, unless they explore it differently. But how much can they explore when they are showing her to be filled with hatred? The ultimate level is the Roy's defeat, which is anyway a normal consequence. That is why you probably feel Maya 2.0 is less interesting than Maya 1.
2. However, in terms of acting, S2 is INSANE, much better than in S1. In terms of casting, 👏 In terms of characterisation also, everyone's crazy.
3. Coming to the story, S1 was a Maya story, it was how SHE behaved in every situation and how her psychological tendencies affected others, and how they retaliated and in turn how she set out to make things right in HER way, at least this is what I can infer.
4. S2 is a revenge story, more than a Maya story. in S1, they never developed or based the other characters as much as they did the ground work for Maya. But here, every character is being explored, which is why probably Maya's impact is not as strong as it was last time. Here, there is an agenda. In S1, there was no planned agenda that anyone had, they went with the flow. This is what JW said too.
5. Also, Joker from The Dark Knight was considered a greater enigma than he was shown because his past was unknown. There was no origin to him, the unknown, therefore the unpredictable was more intriguing, and the audiences attribute the present behaviour to some extremely horrible, unknown past. Same was the case with S1. They didn't really explore her past to the extent that they should have to show WHY Maya ended up being SO obsessed with the people around her. And that probably made her more of a surprise package. One couldn't really predict what Maya was upto, and why she thought what she thought.
6. Here however, Maya 2.0 has a past, and her present nature is acquired and naturalised, it is not in her second nature to be the way she is. It is a facade she's worn to face the world.
So sorry, this ended up as a very long post. Now the issues that I have -
1. Maya 1 was extremely glamorous and fashionable, she was running a fashion magazine, it was natural. The way she walked, stood, talked, held herself, her gestures, her expressions, the way she set her dress right, everything was perfect because of her background in the fashion industry.
2. Maya 2.0 is more so, she's more glamorous, darker, more fashionable, more conscious of her appearance, to the point that it sort of takes away the naturalness to her. I binge watched the past four episodes and realised this. I never felt that about Maya 1 but her excessive focus on such things in S2 is now getting to me. Maya 2.0 has to loosen up with her hatred and unleash that anger in a more uncontrolled manner. Right now, she is TOO poised in my opinion.
Btw, thank you for pointing out something that is NOT good about the show, coz it makes an interesting read and discussion, reading appreciation after appreciation can get to you at some point I guess.
