Rishi Kapoor says actors should focus on building minds: ‘Look at Ranveer, Vicky, my son. None of them have dole-shole’

Rishi Kapoor has one advice for young actors trying to make it big in Bollywood--‘Build your mind rather than your body when you prepare for acting.’

Rishi Kapoor,The Body,Ranveer SinghRishi Kapoor will soon be seen with Emraan Hashmi in The Body.(IANS)Updated: Nov 28, 2019 19:44 IST

From the time of his debut in 1970 with Mera Naam Joker to his upcoming release The Body, iconic actor Rishi Kapoor has lived his Bollywood career transforming from a child actor to a top star to a character artiste. In the course of his journey, he believes he has managed to stay relevant with time because he builds his mind as an actor, and not the body.

Asked what would be the one advice he would give to budding actors, Rishi told IANS: “These days, budding actors are more interested in grooming and building their body. They focus on building muscles than emotional exercise, which is important for actors. Build your mind rather than your body when you prepare for acting, because if you have the acting skill, you will surely become an actor. If you don’t have that, you are replaceable. Look at me, do I have the body? But I am still working, because in every film I try to create a character.”

He added after a pause: “Okay, I maybe old, I do not inspire youngsters. But look at Ayushmann (Khurrana), Rajkummar Rao, Ranveer Singh, Vicky (Kaushal) and -- I’m not taking his name because he is my son -- but Ranbir too is a talented actor! None of them have ‘dole-shole’ (muscles). Kyunki dole rahne se, kalakar nehi banoge. Bus gym mein paise phukega (Having muscles won’t ensure you will be an artist, you’ll only waste money in the gym). (Amitabh) Bachchan saab ko dekho (look at Mr Amitabh Bachchan), he did not have muscles. But even today, he is the original angry young man of Hindi cinema!”

Times have changed, a lot. Just because he and Govinda got away with romancing young girls while sporting a gut back in the day doesn’t mean it will work today. One of the biggest criticisms that Arjun and Abhishek get these is that they have let themselves go. People associate an actor’s physique with their determination and dedication. Arjun and Abhishek are called lazy and that preconceived notion affects how people see them as actors. His examples weren’t quite accurate anyway. Both Ranveer and Vicky spend time in the gym and are basically muscular guys. Rajkumar Rao has gone from muscular to very thin for different roles. We all saw what Aamir Khan did for Dangal. Actors changing their bodies for different roles is part of their preparation now a days. His own son did it for Sanju. So I don’t know if his point got lost somewhere in there or if he just wanted to take a dig at someone specific and just threw some names out there without thinking it through.

Bollywood is presentation of talent basically its a show business actors are combination of expression, body language and voice modulation no doubt actor should have a clear mind to get into the skin of the character but main job is presentation of Character and the story so presentable physic is require,

But Rishi sir is a obsessive soul so his mind & body both are possessed by chicken and family legacy

You didn't read what he said right??

Guy is talking about budding actors, for whom being an actor or more specifically being a hero means having six pack abs and muscular look. He isn't saying, don't build up for roles, he is saying don't think making muscles should be given preference over other aspects.

Two very different things.

No I read his statement. But I still think he’s either taking a specific dig or he’s only looking at this from his own old timer perspective. Fair or unfair people won’t get a chance to make it through the door without having that appealing physicality specially if they want to be the hero. There’s a reason David Dhawan’s son got the lead role and Boman Irani’s son the sidekick in SOTY. Kyoze definitely made an impression in his confrontation scene in SOTY yet he’s never acted after that.

Agree, last few yrs it has a become a norm to have a gym body for aspiring actors, acting aaye naa aaye, 6 pack abs banana zaroori hai.
