Its not. But most thinks so. A propagated lie perhaps. Pakistan does not have so many languages as India. Why would one language be the national language of India which speaks so many languages?

To preserve diversity many countries either do not have a official national language or multiple languages are adopted as national language. Japanese is not japan's national language. They have other lesser known languages which are spoken in some areas. They cannot discriminate against others. And You expect one language to represent whole India?
