Ashok himself knew he had done that because his male ego had taken a different form altogether. It made complete sense to me. After they moved to the haveli, Ashok hated her living with HS, because he saw in HS what he couldn't be - responsible, decent, and honorable. You think he didn't know that HS had loved his late wife and drowned his sorrows in alcohol? Everyone did.
