malhar had felt pure unadulterated happiness many times in his life but nothing topped the list as he stood with pillu in his arms.
his son's toothless gummy smile did things to his heart that he couldn't explain.
tears flowed freely as he kissed his baby's forehead.
he could go through every struggle,ever heart break if that resulted in the presence of his baby boy.
he looked at kalyani with tear filled eyes.
" mera beta kalyani..." he said as if trying to make himself believe this was reality and not a figment of his imagination.
kalyani just smiled taking in the beautiful sight in front of her.
the scene so serene and peaceful that the nurse who stood near couldn't take her eyes of the small family.
their moment was interrupted by the duty doctor who had come to give instructions.
" acp saab ab baby bikul teek hai par abh bhi chota hai toh maa ke paas hi rahne dijiye, haath badlna bilkul mana kar dijiye. aap le sakthe hai par jyadathar maa ke paas hi rahne dihiye...aise baccho ko separation anxiety ho sakthi hai jab maa paas nahi hoti toh." he said making malhar look at kalyani as if asking whether she was okay with it.
kalyani just smiled and nodded her head making him smile in return.
"aur har dho ghante mein dhoodh dena hai. newborns so jaathe hai most of the time tho utta ke dena padega aap ko. aap alarm lagake raaath ko kar sakthe hai. yeh bohut important hai warna baby ka weight kam ho jayegi."
malhar and kalyani nodded agreeing to whatever the doctor was explaining.
finally they walked out of the hospital with pillu tucked in warmth of his father.
kalyani sat on the jeep and malhar gently gave pillu to her.
"aaja mera baccha...aaj hum baba ke gaadi mein jayenge ghar...tu ready haina pillu...tu ready nahi hai ...haww nautanki.." kallu was cooing to the baby making malhar a bit too guilty.
kalyani realised that malhar still standing.
"kya huwa malharji....jana nahi hai ?" she asked confused.
malhar shook his head as if getting out of all the thoughts that were disturbing him and walked to the other side to climb.
he sat in the seat without blinking making kallu confused again.
"malharji teek hona aap...aap chinta math kijiye mein sambhal loogi pillu ko."
"baath woh nahi hai kalyani...mein jaantha hoon tum sambhal logi pillu ko, mere ghar ko , yehan tak mujhe bhi par kya tumhe gussa nahi aaraha?"
"gussa?"
" haan gussa..mujhpe ki meine tumhe iss tarah ek maa ka, ek patni ka , grahsthi ka boj thop diya tumhpe. ithni choti umar mein jab tumhe bina fikar ke ghoomna tha maine aise apne se tumhe baand diya jab tum sirf meri madad kar rahi thi. aisa lag raha hai jaise sampada ke bhagne ka punishment jaise tume mil rahi hai, aisa lag raha hai ki jaise meine tumhe tumhare bhagya se chura liya ho"
kalyani sat in silence for a minute taking in his words.
she gently ran her hand through pillu's light hair trying to gather her thoughts.
"malharji vidhi ke lakhiron par humara bas chaltha tho baath hi kya thi. jab madhuri gayi mein toot gayi thi issi kismat ko kos rahi thi. par dekhiye usne mujhe aayi diya.
malharji , uss din jab aapne meri maag bari toh mein shocked ho gayi thi kyunki mein sapne mein bhi yeh imagine nahi kiya tha....mein aapko daka deke baag sakthi thi par meine nahi kiya. mujhe pata nahi kyun nahi kiya shayad shock mein thi jaise aap ko patha nahi yeh sab kaise huwa.
hum halaton ke victim hai malharji. mein aapko iske liye doshi kaise tahra sakthi hoon jab mein jaanthi hoon ki aapne koyi galat vichar se yeh sab nahi kiya tha. hum bas aao saheb ki balathon mein ulaj gaye teh.
malhar ji mein jaanti hoon mein young hoon mujhe majority baathon ki koyi samjh nahi par ithna zaroor jaanthi hoon ki mein aapki bohut respect karthi hoon aur aaj bhi uss mein koyi kami nahi huyi aur yeh baccha khoon se mera nahi hai par isse mera ek raabta jud gaya hai jab mere hathon mein yeh paida huwa tha. mein uss raabta ko andekha kaise kar sakthi hoon.
malharji jo bhi huwa usse yaad karne se reality toh nahi badal sakthi hai na . aayi kahthi hai bappa jo karte hai kuch acche le liye karte hai...shayad bappa ne pillu ke liye mujhe chuna ho"
malhar sat listening to her words.
he nodded as if answering her unasked question about whether he was understanding her thoughts.
he silently started the jeep.
" waise when did you learn such big words like vidhi...haalath and all huh?" he lightly teased her to lighten the mood as he did not want her to worry about his thoughts too along with other things which were already weighing on her.
" malharji mein ithni bhi stupid nahi hoon. mein atarah saal ki hoon samjhe aap."
"haan how can i forget waise uss din toh kah rahi thi ki tum bas atarh saal ki ho isliye samajh thodi kam hai."
"how mean malharji!"
"and meine yeh bhi kaha tha ki tum saat ki hogi tho bhi aise hi rahogi...yaad hai?"
"mein bulakad thodi hoon malharji.."
"well i just wanted to say that tum apne age se bhi bohut maturity se yeh sab handle kar rahi ho"
kalyani smiled listening to his praise.
"jyada smile karne ki zaroorat nahi bas kabi kabi hi iss maturity ke darshan hota hai warna pagli ki pagli hi ho tum."
" haww malharji!"
"bade aaye mature acp hmm! jallu hai jallu khud toh sambala nahi jaatha kuch phir bhi akad toh dekho"- kallu said to her self.
" kya badd bada rahi ho?"
"kuch nahi ..kuch bhi toh nahi." she said but was happy that the old sweet malhar was making an appearance after so long.
soon they reached wada and malhar went to her side and opened the door.
kalyani couldn't get down as she was holding pillu with both her hands.
she extended pillu to him who just shook his head. he lifted kalyani who held pillu closely, out of the jeep on to the ground earning eeep from kalyani.
"woh dodctor said not to change hands much isliye..." he said as he kissed pillu's forehead and turned to grab the diaper bag and other things from the back.
kalyani waited for him and together they walked to the main door of wada.
anupriya on the other hand was waiting for them with arti ka thaal already ready.
she lit the lamp as soon as she heard the jeep's roar and ran to the door with the thaal.
malhar was taken aback by her sudden appearance but decided to ignore her and walk inside as he did not even want to look at her face but kalyani had other ideas.
she gently pulled his hand to stay to which malhar glared.
"pillu ke liye hai...pls malharji...." she said and malhar huffed but stood looking at the other direction.
anupriya did the aarti of all three and applied tikka on pillu. she turned to malhar who ignored her stretched hand and just walked inside.
kallu tried to smile but anupriya just shook her head and smiled.
"koyi nahi kalyani, aarti keliye toh kada tha.. arey arey kithna pyaara hai yeh...dhona.."
'woh sorry aayi doctor ne kahan hai ki kisi ko nahi dene keliye. chotu haina. yehan tak malharji par bhi restrictions hai. please bura math manana."
"kalyani tu bhi na mein bura kyun manungi.." anupriya smiled brightly.
but their conversation was halted by a very angry aparna.
"dho mere nathu ko yehan...!" she shouted as she walked to them trying to snatch pillu, making the baby cry.
"atya kya kar rahi hi ho aap. usse lag jayehi! atya!"
"chup bilkul chup...yeh meri sampu ka beta hai aur yeh tumhare saath rahe aur tumhe aayi pukare mein bilkul bardaash nahi karungi samji tum." atya said trying to pull pillu.
"atya please usse lag jayegi atya."
"AAYI! " aparna jumped as she heard malhar's roar.
"malhar...."
malhar walked swiftly to them and pulled aparna away from kalyani.
"aayi...nahi atya...mere patni aur bete se durr rahiye.." he said glaring at aparna.
aparna took a step back by intensity of his voice but she was not the one who accepted defeat easily.
"malhar ...yeh meri sampu ka beta hai...ispe haq hai mera."
malhar was pissed. if looks could kill atya would have been in grave long ago.
"haq!? kaisa haq ...koyi haq nahi hai ..na apka aur na uss stree ka jisne isse janam diya hai. yeh mera beta hai...samjhe aap."
"malhar tum sach ko nazar andhaaz kaise kar sakthe ho...yeh ek baccha hai...usse apni maa chahiye...uske guzharne ke baad mein hi iska palan poshan kar sakthi hoon."
"oh aacha aapko mere bacche ke liye ma chahiye... toh hai na uski maa jisne bina soye bina kuch khaye uski dekbaal ki. isske chakkar mein khud ki zindagi chod dhi...par woh aap ya aapki paraye mard ke saath baagne wali aurat nahi hai...meri patni hai...kalyani malhar rane!"
kalyani gasped listening to his words.
of course she knew pillu thought her to be his mother but malharji to acknowledge her as his wife and his son's mother was very over whelming for her.
"malhar..iss najay.."
before aparna could complete malhar cut her off.
"kabardaar uss shabd ka istamaal kiya toh. nikliye mere ghar se...nikaliye..warna arrest kar dunga forcibly gusne ke ilzaam mein." malhar said as he pulled aparna to the other side.
before she could react further malhar pulled a shocked kalyani to the room and closed the door.
"doctor ne kahan na kuch dino ke liye careful raho. tho tum yehan room mein rahna . ab yeh aakh ithna kolna band karo aur aram karo" he said to a surprised kalyani.
kalyani just nodded not knowing what else to say.
malhar gently touched pillu's forehead and looked at kalyani.
"chalo isse apne bistar par sulathe hai."
they both walked to the crib and laid the baby but pillu started crying as soon as kalyani's hand left him.
'koyi nahi malharji mein rakh lethi hoon. doctor ne kaha tha na usko aayi ki warmth zaroori hai...mera matlab hai ki.."
"kalyani tumhe correct kane ki zaroorath nahi ho...maa sirf janam dene se nahi banthi...mere ankhon mein tum pillu ki maa ho. meine dekha hai tumhe uske liye tadapthe....tum se aachi koyi maa mil hi nahi sakthi usse. mujhe bas iss baath ka dukh hai ki mere aur pillu ke karan tum par ithni badi zinedariyan aagayi."
"nahi malharji yeh ek honor hai ki aap mujhe pillu ke aayi ka darja de rahe hai. waise humara raabta kisi naam ka nautaj nahi hai , woh mera hai par phir bhi aapke muh se aayi sunke bohut accha lag raha hai. aap mere uss kushi ko aapke guilt se kam math kariye na.."
malhar shook his head and smiled.
"phirse badi badi shabde....nayi koyi dictionary la rakhi hai kya.." he teased to lightened the mood.
"nahi woh aayi..Malharji are u teasing me! how mean!"
"aacha tum laet jawo aur pillu ko apne close rakho jaise uss doctor ne bola tha."
kalyani laid accordingly and placed pillu close to her body and looked at malhar for approval.
he just smiled and sat near the chair watching them.

"mera nathu...aao saheb kuch kijiye na!" aparna cried.
"chup bilkul chup! na hum uss malhar ka muh dekhna chahthe hai na hi uske beta ka. aur kabardaar agar uss taraf jhaaki toh. usse kaise bhi karke yehan se nikalna hai iske alwa hume kisi aur cheez se koyi matlab nahi."
"tum ithni pathar dil kaise ho sakthi ho ahaliya." rao saheb asked.
"rao saheb aab beech mein nahi bolenge toh acha hai. ithni bezati ki hai uss malhar ne humari aur aap mujhe pathar kah rahe hai. aparna bhool jawo tumhara nathu hai. mujhe isme koyi behas nahi sunn na. mujhe bas uss malhar ko is ghar se nikalna hai"

kalyani and malhar tucked baby pillu after putting him in the crib as he was sound asleep.
"chalo malharji pillu so gaya...ab hum jaake kuch kha lete hai."
they walked into kitchen where bai had already prepared their lunch.
when they lived in malhar's house they used to eat together with sampada and maayi but now equation had changed but there was no awkwardness as they sat to eat.
"kalyani mujhe todi der ke liye police station jaana padega...tum teek rahogi na.."
"ji malharji ap jaake aayiye bas atya shor machane na aaye bas."
"do u want me put someone at the door?"
"kya? aap kya kah rahe hai, aap security dalenge?"
"haan toh mere ghar mein meri patni aur bacche ko safely nahi rakh saktha toh mein kahan ka acp hoon."
kalyani was once again surprised at him addressing her as his wife.
"kya huwa? yeh muh kholke kya dek rahi ho."
"kuch nahi malhar ..bas yuhi...."
malhar's wounds were fresh and there was a part of him who just wanted revenge from everyone who was responsible for his condition but he also knew kalyani did not deserve any kind of sadness in all this fudged up situation.
he wanted her to be comfortable and happy.
he argued with himself that it was his ego that pushed him to show the world that he could make his wife happy but he also knew that was farthest from truth. he had no care of the world after what happened to him but he cared for her and guilt of pushing her into this marriage was the one which made him revert back to a concerned husband and father from the monster that he had become after the betrayal.
he was emotionally broken, the anger of the betrayal still burning brightly in his soul but he couldn't let that fire consume this girl who was now dependent on him.
she needed him and also his son needed him. if he had made her his wife then it was his duty to protect her and keep her happy. it was simple as that.
he had no family but a kaka who he loved and respected immensely. for the first time he cursed kaka for making his moral so strong that even with monster lurking inside him he couldn't turn away from his responsibilities of a husband and father.
he had to fight the monster that was threatening to take over his sanity for that sole reason alone otherwise he could have went on rampage destroying every one of deshmukhs but alas kaka ke sanskaar was to much in him.
"malharji kya soch rahe hai..?" kalyani asked concerned.
"kuch nahi kalyani... mein bai se kah detha hoon ki woh pillu ko tel lagake naha dhe.."
they completed the lunch and brought pillu to the courtyard for his first bath in the house.
kalyani placed pillu in bai's hand who sat with legs stretched forward for giving the bath.
as soon as kalyani's hand left pillu, he started crying violently.
the bai tried his best but pillu was not at all stopping.
hearing pillu's cries malhar who had gone inside the room rushed outside.
"kya huwa?"
"saab pillu chup hi nahi ho raha, shayd tai ne mujhe diya isliye."
"kalyani lelo bacche ko...woh doctor ne bola thana kuch din usse separation anxiety ho sakthi hai jab tum uske paas nahi ho tho."
kalyani took pillu in her arms and the baby quieted at once as soon as she started cooing to him.
"par malharji hum isse nahlayenge kaise, mujhe toh aathi bhi nahi."
"koyi baath nahi tai...mein sikha dethi hoon na tai." the bai said.
kalyani sat as the bai instructed pushing her salwar till her knees.
bai placed pillu on her stretched legs and instructed her how to apply the oil but kalyani was finding it very difficult as she was scared of pillu slipping .
malhar stood there watching for a few minutes and instructed them to stop seeing how scared kalyani looked.
"kalyani tum aise usse tel lagana seekho pehle mein abhi aatha hoon aur haan ,nahlana math"
"par malharji..."
but malhar was already on phone walking outside.
kalyani could see him waiting outside for a few minutes then he was gone.
aparna who was watching everything rushed to the side as soon as malhar was out of sight.
but before she could enter a hand stopped her.
aparna looked up to see a police woman holding her hand.
"sir ne kisiko bhi unke ghar enter karne se mana kiya hai." the woman said surprising everyone around.
"iska matlab malharji mazak nahi kar rahe teh , woh asal mein diya aur woh bhi ithni jaldi shayad isiliye woh door par wait kar rahe teh inke aane tak." kalyani said to herself surprised.
"par woh mera naathu hai, aap mujhpe hukum nahi chala sakthe.." aparna was screaming.
"dekhiye sir ne kahan hai ki aap agar nahi suni toh jail mein daal deneko zabardasti gusne ke liye." the woman said sternly making aparna scared.
pallavi snickered hearing this making aparna more angry.
"hass kyun rahi ho?" she demanded.
"kuch bhi toh nahi...lagtha hai malhar seekh gaya kisse apne ghar mein aane dena hai aur kisse nahi.." pallavi taunted.
'tujhe toh mein baad mein dekh loogi" aparna said and left inside.
kalyani on the other hand massaged pillu carefully.
"kithna nahutanki hai re tu...haaan...bai ko malish bhi nahi karne dega...gandha baccha.." kalyani was cooing sweetly making anu smile from the other side.
they were still massaging when malhar entered with a small bath tub.
"malharji yeh.."
"kalyani chote baccho ko isme nehlaana aasan hota hai."
kalyani smiled brightly watching him place the tub near her.
"areeey kithna cute hai yeh.."
"accha chalo uto aur yehan leta dho pillu ko.." malhar instructed.
kalyani gently placed pillu into the tub with his head raised up.
she gently started pouring water on pillu but the baby was wiggling so much that she had to hold the baby too.
malhar saw this and pushed arms of his shirt up and sat near kallu and helped her hold the baby.
"mein pakadtha hoon ..tum paani dhalo.." he said surprising everyone including aao saheb and anupriya who were watching the whole scene with great interest.
"yaa baiya....yeh malhar kalyani ke saath kya kar raha hai..."pallavi said loudly for aparna to hear who rushed outside her room almost tripping.
"kya...kya..huwa."
"arrey tai dekho na baccha nehla raha hai..woh bhi kithne pyaar se..warna yehan ke mard toh bilkul nalayak hai..kuch bhi kaam mein haath batathe nahi..toh bacche nahlana dur ki baath hai....aur yeh dekho malhar kaise kajyani ki madad kar raha hai...nal ke papa toh paas bhi nahi aathe teh" pallavi huffed.
aparna was fuming seeing the scene.
seeing aparna so angry made pallavi more happy.
"kithna pyaar hai na tai...acha huwa sampada baag gayi..malhar ko uski asli patni jo mil gayi....." pallavi snickered.
aparna had enough and pushed pallavi and walked inside once again plotting for revenge.
malhar and kalyani on the the other hand bathed pillu successfully and wrapped him in a cute blanket with tiny teddies with the help of bai.
"ab aap isse dhood pila dijiye tai...yeh so jayega..." bai instructed as she gathered everything from the floor.
malhar watched with a smile as his baby boy drank his milk and fell asleep in kalyani's lap.
he turned and left for police station with a content smile.
