LOL. I love HR as much as the next functional woman but this is the heights of ridiculousness! Rakesh Roshan was a well established film maker with a slew of hits behind him (Khudgarz, Khoon bhari Maang, Kishen Kanhaiya, Karan Arjun). Khel was below average. Koyla and King Uncle would be flops. Its not like Rakesh Roshan had no equity in the industry to help out HR. KNPH was also produced and directed by his dad and was a dream launch vehicle!

Akshay started off with Raj Sippy, Abbas Mustan, Jains and was supported by Nadiadwalas since beginning.

Incase people dont know, he even worked with Yash Raj Banner in 1994 in Yeh Dillagi. He even did supporting role to SRK in Dil To Pagal Hai.

The thing is Akshay was never really a Top Star nor was he a Good actor. Even when YRF gave him Tashan, it tanked. Dharma gave him Brothers, that tanked too. His good run started just some years back and he is right now at the Peakest he has ever been. But, he was supported by different banners and film families through out. Ofcourse, not to the extent as SRK or Sid Malhotra. So, that way, Akshay is definitely more Self made than SRK.

Abbas mustang and Jains were not big as you claim, he became bigger agree after 2007 but he gave some of the biggest hits also in 90s, mohra and mkta were amongst top 5 grossers of that year, KKK was a record opener in 1996 and was the biggest opener of that year, so he give hits before he married twinkle lol

He and Ajay have been giving hits. But, they were never in the run as the Top stars. If he was such a Big star, he wud not hv played supporting role to SRK. He was always struggling most of the time.

In 1994 he was amongst top 3 star of that year if you do some research but was inconsistent, KKK was a record opener and was biggest opener of that year.

The question was being selfmade without big support, your examples were Jains and mustan who were not big banners as you claim lol.

1994 was the year when Hum Aapke Hain Kaun released. KKK released in 1996

Wat about Sajid Nadiadwala? I think u shud change the topic as those who survived without YRF and Dharma. That wud hv been more accurate.

Well, fact is SRK was not the big star in Darr or Deewana. They were RIshi Kapoor and Sunny Deol films when it started off. It is another thing that he stole the thunder from them. Especially in Darr.

Incase u dont know(since u took a dig at Hrithik n his father), Aamir walked out of Darr and YRF was looking for a replacement but no star wanted to play bad guy. That time, Rakesh Roshan who had given him his earliest break and was working with SRK for King Uncle recommended him to Aditya Chopra who was assisting his Dad back then. And Adi saw some clips and in his own words "They were not that impressed with SRK but still went ahead as they were desperate to cast someone".

In Uday’s words, even the idea of Darr and the title had a Hrithik connection:

Hrithik and me were seeing a movie, a less known movie called Dead Calm (Starring Nicole Kidman). We saw the video of the film and we decided to make Adi (Aditya Chopra) see it. Just to show a very good film. Adi saw the film and he loved it instantly. That is the inspiration for Darr. Infact, the title Darr, is the title Hrithik had kept for a movie that he had actually made. An amateur film which he had shot. It was Hrithik’s title and when Adi decided on making this film, he told Hrithik that he will use this title, because it suits the subject.
