Was she ever the number 1 actress? She is considered a star today. What made her so successful with audiences?

Nope, she was number 2 behind Kareena during their era.

She was in the top 3 in Bollywood in the last decade. But her move to Hollywood has left her in no-man's land. She is still popular here, but people follow the adage 'out of sight out of mind'.

She is still growing in Hollywood. I think it's too early to say whether she reached popularity there.

Well her debut movie was hit but the first movie she got actually praised for was Aitraaz i guess. She has a pretty good filmography to her credit and so many hits. She was pitched against Kareena back in the day. While Kareena being a nepo kid got huge backing from the industry, PC being an outsider made her mark.

You should see her filmography then probably you'll realize what made her successful with the audience.

I was probably too young to remember. But didn’t kareena debut earlier than her and was a lot ahead of her in films and even acting talent? But somehow they were compared a lot to each other?

Nope, that time Rani and Preity were still around. After they faded away, it was a toss-up between Kareena and Priyanka. Even Katrina was hugely popular at that time.

She won awards for fashion, a NA too. But before that she had a series of flops based on her filmography.

Yes, but they were of same age and Kareena got a lot of chances despite giving Flops after Flops because of being a star kid. When Priyanka debuted, Kareena finally was able to claim the top actress spot because of JWM. So Priyanka never reached the top because of a privileged star kid.
