I am sure this film has been discussed many times but I happened to watch it yesterday for the umpteenth time. Gosh what a movie! Wonderfully musical and melancholic. Excellent direction by Shyam Benegal. And the open ending, the audience decides whether Zubeidaa was responsible for the crash or it was a technical issue.

The entire cast- Karishma, Manoj Bajpayee, Rekha, Shakti Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Lilette Dubey, Surekha Sikri, Rajit Kapoor et al, were perfectly cast and were brilliant in their roles.

And while I am not a huge fan of ARR, but this album and background score is his best till date...So Gaye Hai sends chills down my spine every time I hear it ❤️

Special mention to Khalid Mohammed, the real life Riyaz...I can't imagine his pain of never have met or known his mother and the lengths he must have gone through to find out her story...and what a tragic life she lived 💔

Why was it "ahead of its time"?!

I liked it :)

I watched it perhaps an year ago. I liked the cinematography, they way it is shot, the setting, the soundtrack.. and the narrative style where the son approaches a few characters who share a piece of their memory about Zubeidaa. A memorable opening scene in Hindi cinema. The most memorable scene for me was the way the scene flows from the little boy asking about his mother into a song.. brought tears..

Rekha's short role blew me away though, her poise, her grace, really a mature performance.. Great performances by all, infact.

But I have to say, Zubeidaa's character put me off a little towards the end, I couldn't fully sustain the feeling of 'oh wow, she's such an innocent beautiful person' that the film creates in the beginning.. nonetheless, sad story.

Ditto! Rekha was phenomenal.

Zubeidaa's character towards the end for me was showing a girl who was suppressed throughout her life, first by her father and then by the rules of royalty which drove her crazy...how suffocating was it for the girl who was being sexually approached by her own brother in law and she could do nothing about it. The poor girl just wanted to live a simple happy life with her son and the man she loved. No one really understood her, and even if her husband loved her he never understood her desires completely 💔

OMG same!

My mom was watching it on TV and I didn't understand it, or why she got so emotional by the end.

Years later suddenly I remembered the plane crash scene and Karishma's ethreal beauty in every scene...I googled and found the film and have seen it infinite times ever since.

Rekha was brilliant ofc and Manoj was so charming as the Raja of Fatehpur! Such restrained and subtle performances ❤️

What do you guys think about the end? Was the plane crash an accident or someone was responsible for it? If yes, who?
