I see people bringing up Gully Boy as an analogy to Kabir Singh (abusive girl instead of guy) and I just wanted to point out that
1) several people took issue with alia’s character, namely feminists
2) Sakina was never violent with Murad. She turned her violence on other girls. So it was internalised misogyny, not misandry.
3) murad cheats on sakina, lies about it, and then makes her feel like the bad guy. She begs him to return. He only does so after he realises he doesn’t want kalki. She forgives him Immediately and takes him back though he doesn’t even really apologise. She basically has to coerce him to return after HE CHEATED On HER. In what universe does this show female supremacy?
To sum up, there are several issues with Gully Boy, but they also pertain to misogyny.
As for Kabir Singh, the response and the kind of comments you see from dudebros who are reacting to Kabir Singh criticism as if someone attacked their first born proves that the film didn’t work in spite of the misogyny, it worked BECAUSE of it. Unfortunately, for a lot of desi men, it represents their ultimate fantasy.
