Haven't watched ADHM, nor the white-washed glorification of "sanju," and I understand your point about hypocrisy of the critics, which in many instances is undeniably present. But from what all I'm hearing, there seems to be no redeeming point in this movie. Asking a woman to undress at a knife point, the very blurry and dubious skip over consent, kissing a girl right after first talking to her, slapping her, and the list just ridiculously seems to go on. I'm not a voracious movie watcher, thus I don't know about the latter two foreign movies you pointed out, but at least in godfather's case, though it can be called misogynist to an extent, that misogyny is not the main focus of the film, it is a more of an aftermath of that world. Yet, this is marketed as a love story. The supposive "love" is the core focus and that's where the real issue is, this is not love, it is an asshole in the name of a hero whose actions are being glorified and a meek female who takes all the crap given to her it seems. As a female, it is shocking that such characters can be accepted or even celebrated by the masses.
That knife scene was a comic moment though, not something serious moment.
See Kabir Singh was an asshole and a person who was problematic to the core, but people don't see plot points like Preeti was smitten by him from the first look, yes him kissing her on her cheeks on second meeting was a balant of toxic masculinity telling everyone she is mine, but it wasn't like Kambakth Ishq type forceful kiss. People seem to ignore that Preeti was also very demanding and stubborn with Kabir, she was exactly like him bar the violence.
People talk about Kabir hitting Preeti during that breakdown of him, but don't talk about Preeti slapping him when she was being unreasonable, and he said jokingly he will die, obviously she cannot slap as hard as him, but she did slap him, while she was the one who was being unreasonable and childish. And no I am not saying Kabir's slapping is justified because she also slapped him, but that these two people had certain features in their relationship.
Preeti was as much into him as he was into her, that she used to bunk classes to be with him, to go and meet him to his new practice school in UttaraKhand from Delhi. She used to demand him to kiss her, to be with her.
See the thing, Preeti and Kabir were same type of people, selfish, self harming and stubborn with rebel like attitude, just that Kabir had vices, Preeti didn't. She was as addicted towards him, as was she.
I don't get from where people got this narrative that Preeti was just a puppet, when the girl after loosing all ties with him, getting married forcibly by her parents, still left her husband and started living alone waiting for Kabir while being pregnant with his kid. Was her love for that asshole stupid?? Yes.
But was it because Kabir forced her to?? No. Even after being forcibly married with someone else, she didn't gave up, rather left that guy, so this thing about her being a meek doormat is not an entirely true thing. Yes her being in that hyper relationship with Kabir was stupid, but Preeti wasn't a girl who did it because she was forced, it was her will. Kabir was the guy who freed her from the traditional and conservative background and made her be what she became at the end, and that was she was just like Kabir, just that she didn't had vices like him.
See the thing is Kabir wasn't just a misogynistic in way that he thought he was superior to women, he was an asshole to everyone including his family and friends, hence by default he was misogynistic. He was beating up men, warning them, terrorising everyone, but does that mean he was a man hater too?? No he was a selfish and self centered stubborn jerk, who didn't saw anything else but him and his desires, hence became everything faulty.
See the thing people talking about people cheering during certain scenes(I didn't saw though in my single screen), is indeed bad and their is some thing wrong in people, but is movies the reason why they are like that?? Or it is their family and environment?? Questions like this don't have their answer with pin pointing one movie.
