mainly its the software and the hardware that cost a bomb... one needs good quality stuff to render final images, which takes at least few hours per image per machine...the software companies also charge a lot, since it will be used for commercial purpose, licenses has to be bought for the entire team, so one license doesnt work...that increases the cost a lot...

the process of creating even once small sequence with one character involves a lot of people...and we need good talented artist who would get the work done fast with best quality...so obviously good artist will charge good salary... that means at least a team of 30-35 people right from modeller to texture artist to rigger to groomer, plus lighters, compositors and editors, (even tracking and roto artist, if we have live bg plates shot with the actors) just to get a small sequence out... if the project has heavy vfx then team can extend to anywhere between 150-500 people...

for hollywood projects the r & d takes a lot of time ... Also most of the Directors are never sure of what they want and so changes the assets (character / props / look) etc at the last moment, resulting in the earlier renders going waste...all this adds up to the cost...
