** Varun Dhawan Kalank Reviews Round Up **

Dhawan revels in the melodramatic syntax, committing to the film's pitch and making the audience root for him.

-Raja Sen

Varun Dhawan's Stellar Act lifts up Kalank he is in fine form as Zafar. From being the boisterous lover boy to the young man dealing with abandonment issues, he nails it. Watch out for the scene towards the end at the climax. This has to be one of Varun Dhawan's best.

-Urmimala Banerjee BL

Fan favourite Varun Dhawan in all his physical glory is trying his damnedest best & probably the hardest in all this cast, this role required him to play a wide range of emotions, which we kind of expect from him now and he does not disappoint, he gives a very very earnest performance, Maze aye.

- Sucharita Tyagi Film Companion

Varun gets better with every film and in Kalank, he again surpasses expectations

- P.S Jha

Varun makes Zafar look convincing and has perhaps delivered one of the best performances in the movie. For me, his scenes with Madhuri stood out and his chemistry with Alia was without a doubt superlative.Alia, on the other hand, delivered a poor performance which could have been great. While her scenes with Varun were the highlight, long dialogue delivery made it look caricaturish. It seemed she was trying too hard to fit into the shoes of an aspiring classical singer.

-Pinkvilla

Varun Dhawan has the most complex character, someone who has to be both noble & vengeful, he has to roam around shirtless flaunting his formidable ABs without looking silly and make a clumpsy VFX bul fight look authentic. Zafar is a man transformed by love and Varun skillfully captures both his strength & his vulnerability.

- Anupama Chopra

Varun Dhawan has got perhaps the most challenging role of his life and makes sure he delivers his best.

- Filmfare

Of the cast the ones that leave an impression are Varun Dhawan who somehow embraces the melodrama and makes you care for Zafar.

- Rajeev Masand

Varun Dhawan lives the role of Zafar. He looks and plays the frustrated character with a lot of conviction. He is fantastic in the last part.

-Komal Nahta

Varun Dhawan as a haraami' offspring of a respectable father and not-so-respectable mother, all bare torso agleam, as he goes about fighting fake-looking bulls and brandishing swords, is a good fit for his part. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt's histrionics (the former looking as if he could well belong to that era, and Bhatt staying watchable, if increasingly, exasperatingly familiar)

- Indian Express

Varun Dhawan yet again proves that he can juggle action/ romance/ dance/ drama, his chemistry with Alia Bhatt lights up the screen when they are together.

- Bhawana Somaaya

Varun Dhawan saves the film from becoming an ultimate disaster. Varun is as always at his best and gives his hundred per cent to the role. He also contributes to the laughter quotient. In the climax however, he is terrific.

- Bollywood Hungama

Varun Dhawan sears with the intensity and rage stemming out of childhood neglect and societal oppression

- Huffington Post

Dhawan as the mercurial Zafar is simply magnetic.

-Manjusha Radhakrishnan

Varun Dhawan in what is by far the meatiest role of his career, throw everything that they can muster into the mix, giving the plot both potency and pathos. Playing a young man scarred in spirit and body, Dhawan exudes zest as he ventures well beyond his comfort zone and consistently strikes the right notes.

- NDTV

Kalank runs on Varun Dhawan's fire. He has longing, greed and lust in his eyes. The script and Varun never paint Zafar as a bad guy. They deep dive into his complexities. The film hinges on Varun Dhawan.

looking at the reviews (havent watched the movie, neither do i plan to) I feel the story should've been from Zafar's POV... he seems like the actual victim and his decision moves the story ahead...

but of course snakeJO cant see anyone other then Alia taking centerstage...

Watched Kalank, overall movie itself isn't terrible but when audience expectations are high and the production design / look and feel is too Bhansali-esque, disappointments were bound to happen.
Till the first half, everything was still going good. Alia's opening song was good, despite feeling like a copy paste edit of Aishwarya's 'Man Mohini' opening song from HDDCS. Sonakshi was actually quite pleasant in this movie, granted she and Sanjay Dutt are hardly there to begin with. Director Abhishek Varman played ARK to his strengths, making him stoic and quiet vs loud and OTT. Varun had a first class entry and till Ghar More Pardesiya, Madhuri and Alia's initial 2 scenesand Varun and Alia's first meeting everything was going well. The interval point reached a peak in which the conflict (of Varun seducing Alia for revenge against Sanjay Dutt for disowning him) was presented well.

The whole movie started going downhill in the 2nd half however, in which we were supposed to believe that Varun and Alia are madly in love with each other, which didn't really work/feel convincing enough. Also dragging out the 2nd half (highlight only being Madhuri's 2 min scene with Sanjay Dutt, peak 90's nostalgia) didn't help. The songs in the 2nd half, Aira Gaira and even Tabaah Ho Gaye didn't help with the length. The climax was way too drawn out and the random flash forward to 10 years later also felt randomly inserted into the narrative.

Performances were good to bad. Kunal Khemu was good in his fundamentalist role, Varun tried but his character wasn't written well enough, he went OTT in some places too. His dialogue delivery is also very jarring, he sounds nothing like a Lahore boy would. I'm not an Alia fan but she is a decent actor; she could not pull off this role at all though, it's just not her forte - the sooner Papa Jo and she realise that, the better for them. Madhuri had 2/3 good scenes but she was looking terrible in the close ups, and the dancing on the floor parts in Tabaah Ho Gaye were quite jerky and looked unbecoming and clumsy on Madhuri considering her age and how graceful she normally is. Sanjay and Sonakshi were here and there but Sonakshi had a few good scenes with ARK. The director used ARK very smartly, didn't give him any big 'acting' emotional scenes and thus ARK did well with whatever he got.

Kalank Review and rating.
Watched Kalank today.

Plot
Set in fictional town of Husnanbad it is essentially a love story in the times of partition. The film opens with Satya (Sonakshi Sinha) receiving the news she has at the most two years before cancer claims her life. To see that her husband Dev (Aditya Roy Kapoor)does not suffer after her death, she extracts the pound of flesh owed to her by Roop's(Alia Bhatt) family asking Roop to become Dev's wife after her death. Roop gives in to her father's pressure but only if Dev marries her without waiting for Satya's death. She is looking out for herself just in case Dev refuses to marry her after Satya's death. Reluctantly Dev agrees, telling her "Is rishte mein izzat hogi ppyaar nahi hoga".

The marriage is obviously not consummated. Roop has not even seen Dev's face. She finds it difficult to settle in the role of second wife. To keep her busy Satya asks her to work in Dev's Newspaper office. There is a funny scene here that brings a smile to your face. In return Roop extracts the permission to visit Heera Mandi to learn finer points of singing from Bahar Begum(Madhuri Dixit) where she meets a womanizer Zafar and falls in love with him. This changes the life of all the people connected to them

The plot has multiple stories interwoven. However director Abhishek Verman has handled it well. Each and every character in the film is flawed including Sonakshi Sinha, We can say her character is relatively pure and pristine but she also has a flaw. Each character is consumed by some or the other major adverse emotions like hatred or greed or selfish love or fundamentalism.

Performance.
There is not a single bad performance in this movie. Each and every actor has given a top notch performance .
Standout performances are that of Sonakshi Sinha, Kunal Khemu and Madhuri Dixit.

Sonakshi Sinha has given a fantastic performance. She excels in such roles, reminds me of her performance in Lootera. There is no other contemporary actor who can do justice to such roles other than Sonakshi Sinha. There is a scene where Roop and Dev are having a cordial conversation after many days of cold war between them. Sonakshi Sinha walks in, sees them talking, turns back and starts walking towards the camera. Expressions on her face are fantastic, priceless. Good acting.

Kunal Khemu plays the role of an useful idiot manipulated by Zafar who wants to settle personal scores. But Khemu gets out of Zafar's control and sticks to his original agenda of working on dividing India. He becomes Bhasmasur who targets his own creator Zafar. Khemu has always been a good actor right from Zakhm to Kalyug. Here too he does not disappoint. He does not seem to have much hatred for Hindus in the beginning, so much so that, knowing Zafar's womanizing ways, he tells Zafar that Roop is a married woman from a decent family and he should at least not make her a subject of his lust. It is Zafar who instigates and provokes him against Hindus.

Madhuri Dixit comes up with another fantastic performance as an extremely selfish Bahar Begum who abandons her own baby hoping her paramour will come back to her but he doesn't. And then her son also rejects her. She becomes a recluse, a sad woman who has lost everything in her life. The loss is evident on her face. She cannot say anything even though she sees her son being berated as a bas***d. Mother-son bond between her and Zafar is really good. She does not need many dialogues to convey emotions. When Zafar grab's Sanjay Dutt's collar she just hisses "Zafar" and gives him a warning look. Excellent. And the Tabah Ho gaye is just fantastic. THG has essentially established and reaffirmed her as the greatest bollywood dancer that ever will be. I was thinking f**k, she is going to break her back into two during THG . What a performance. Great actor, Great dancer.

Varun Dhavan as Zafar is good. But his dialogue delivery is not upto the mark. However what he lacks in dialogue delivery , he more than makes up in expressions and body language. Zafar is a shameless womanizer consumed by hatred so much so that he does not mind if thousands of innocent people die as long he gets his revenge. Varun Dhavan has got Zafar spot on.

Alia Bhatt had a really good author backed role and she was good. But she too has dialogue delivery issue. She gets better as the movie progresses but the flaw is too evident to ignore. She is still young and has huge potential to be a good actor

Aditya Roy Kapoor was a surprise package of the film. I have never seen any of his film. From the trailer he seemed to have landed a good role and he has done complete justice to the role in the film. He does not like his father for his mother suffered because of him. The strain is portrayed very well.

Balraj Chaudhary is probably one of the most unfortunate characters. He loses everything. Sanjay Dutt is good. He looks more threatening without going overboard than Varun Dhawan, ARK and Kunal Khemu put together.

Music:
This is one of Pritam's better work, not the best but better.

Cimeatography and Sets are awesome. Binod Pradhan captures the essense of bygone era very well. Dialogues are really good, especially one liners.

Movie could have been edited better. The bull fight and aira gaira should not have been there. The director producer should think of removing unnecessary parts like bull fight and aira gaira

Rating :
Plot/Story Script and Dialogues - 1
Direction -1
Acting/Performance - 1
Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit, Kunal Khemu - 2
Music and Choreography - 1
Cinematography and Sets - 1
Overall - 7/10

The sh*t that Kalank was getting made me a bit curious. Now I am starting to wonder if people dissing Kalank have actually watched the movie including many of the YouTube reviewers.
