It's the Indian selection committee's fault. They have options which could do well (if not win at least be nominated) but they always overlook them. They frequently choose films which anyone who knows anything about the history of film could easily predict the academy will actively dislike. It's infuriating. Most recent example..The Lunchbox was loved at Cannes. It had good distribution. A lead actor westerners recognized. It had award season buzz. They were talking about it in America on National Public Radio. There were American critics saying it would be nominated and... India didn't enter it into competition!
I would understand if India said, you know what we don't give a f about the Oscars and we aren't sending anything. But to actually have a committee to select an entry and then not to pick the film that has the best chance of winning is idiotic. Idiotic but repeated every single year 😵

Westerners do have an affinity for poverty po*n.
That being said, I don't think "Period. End of Sentence." is a stigma movie nor does it dabble in poverty po*n. Menstruation is a stigma for many in India because we have made it so. Despite its "taboo" status the women and even some men in the documentary are shown to ask questions, display curiosity, and show a general enthusiasm to better the lives of themselves and others. One woman and her husband are overjoyed at her ability to earn an income making and selling pads.

So while Oscars are shite and Americans enjoy poverty po*n - this documentary was a well-deserved win that showed Indians shifting the status quo.
