Why only stigma movies of India reach Oscars

Not trying to take anything away from period movies but why only movies such as these or about slum kids make it to Oscars? 😕

Maybe because Indian men are sexist pigs? Indian men will call women who speak up as crazy. The fault is with men. Women are trying to get an education, live, and be themselves without having to be harassed by men. In Period, women aren't allowed to go to mandir to pray because they are on their period. Aren't these rules written by men?

If you are trying to say it is because they are condescending.. I think that's also wrong.. IMO.

I really believe there have been subjects that were interesting and got celebrated.

'Lion' and ' Life of Pi' nearly got the Oscars. And they were positive.

Maybe not enough lobbying. Also.. it's important who chooses what to send...

It's not like Oscars can see the OTHER movies/docs that are NOT sent for jury consideration...

Has any hindi movie ever won in best film in foreign category?

Last I remember lagaan was nominated since then no movie has been nominated let alone win

I don't know. I feel the Oscars always have these big dramatic films win. But I would rather that than some silly masala flick 😆

how the f**k is having periods a "stigma"? It's part of being a woman.

It's this ridic attitude that has made life so difficult for underprivileged Indian women, and why these stories attract attention. First of all, it is a great story of achievement: girls taking matters into their own hands. And secondly, people in the developed world are shocked at how hard women in India etc have to struggle for basic necessities of life. Because women's hygiene is a taboo topic and too harsh for the delicate sensibilities of Indian men.

The West still envisions India in a certain way. They're besotted by slums, poverty, snake charmers, elephants & mowgli. That and that annoying telemarketer from Bangalore who calls himself 'Rick Smith'.

To be fair a significant part of India still plays to the image but it would be nice if the other side of India was shown once in a while.
