Chapter 52: Love is a losing game
'So what?' Adeel shouted louder than intended as Sam shrunk in her seat, Maan though feeling slightly guilty however walked out the room feeling rather pleased, Sam understood his dilemma and even gave reason to his voice. However Adeel wasn't too happy with the reasoning.
'It doesn't matter, you ARE his responsibility!' he finalised with a red gleam in his eyes
'and how so? He gave me a shoulder when it mattered but that was then. I now can't expect any more Adeel?' she cried when she realised he was failing to understand her. Why did he expect Maan to do good by her? This was her mess after all, why would anyone do good for her, or by her.
'Why don't you get it, he promised you?' the frustration was at its peak and so was his voice thus forcing Sameera to move the phone away from her ears. He himself was beyond understanding which he didn't know why.
'No you don't get it Adeel, just because he promised once upon a time doesn't automatically make him my ...anything' she ended with a sigh, arguing over this was useless especially with Adeel who always believed he was right.
'In that case you also promised, you promised me a happy life' she whispered as her voice broke through and Adeel stilled, wearing a face so unknown to him as his heart spoke of a question. He was a man who always delivered on his promises, whether that was of protection or destruction. He had hardly ever failed and even if he did, there were repercussions for everyone involved, even himself so now when fate played against him and worse, he had no clue how to rectify it. But somewhere deep, somewhere lost; his inner callings was slightly pleased with the outcome. Maan and Sameera walking away from one another, satisfied a part of his heart which he played zero knowledge to. The game that started with Geet wasn't only versed around her no more, well at least not entirely and that's what caused such an uproar, both in manner and speech.
Dadi thumbed to the sofa as the reality sunk in, she had ruined a poor girl's life in wanting to correct her grandson's spoilt happenings. What kind of woman did that make her?
'Dadi app teek ho?' Meera asked seeing the broken face
'Don't worry I don't die, I won't repeat that mistake' she answered rudely stalling her tears, she had done far too much damage already to cause any further. Maan wasn't supposed to be crowned with a jewel like Geet, and now when that priceless procession left broken hearted, she had realised how big of a crime she has committed. Dadi silently headed to her room only to be stopped by a smiling Maan.
'Dadi' he smiled hugging her and she pushed him back in full force, she had stolen a humble girl's future for him, him the grandson that didn't deserve a second chance, at least not with an innocent girl like her.
'Dadi' he questioned obstructing the fall, shock thundered through like a 100 galloping horses, the smile he wore after the recent whirlwind quietened into a grim line as he watched Dadi back up and throw an icy glare
'What have I ever done to deserve you Maan?' she cursed herself for the first time in their lifetime, something in her broke and she couldn't help but cause the same pain in him like he did with her. The mother within her was trapped by anguish and pain, and unfortunately in that pain she couldn't save herself never mind her children.
'But what...'
'Don't Maan, just don't' she stopped raising a commanding finger, this was an order to stop him from talking, stop him from blaming her once again. Because deep down, she knew the mightiest faults lied in her, she was the cause of this wreckage, had she never forced Maan then today Geet would have been happy and away.
'Dadi kya hua?' he blubbered like those innocent children who stood clueless, why all of a sudden had his appearance made her angry, he was once again transported to his childhood where everything he did was judged and dismissed with a punishment. But this time around he felt much more pain, Dadi's closed and uncaring eyes forced a new theory, a theory where he was unwanted leading to a few more tears
'Dadi please' he cried as he tugged at the end of her sari, like he did in the past when as a child he hid away under the falling trail after committing a mistake
'Mar gaye Dadi' she replied stone cold and then walked towards her bedroom without throwing a backwards glance. Maan stood there frozen in a timetabled vacuum, his childhood flashed by and he slouched away in defeat.
It was a very silent drive, Vicky had focused on driving for most parts of the journey however once in a while he'd ask Geet to repeat after the female voice of the navigation system, it was his way of curbing in her thoughts. Geet looked very distort however once given a duty she was much more sober, her mind keyed in to the saying of the directions hence Maan stood at the back of her mind for now at least.
TRING TRING TRING
'Hello' Vicky answered hoarsely, he was spoken very limited since yesterday hence the voice box seemed to have gone lost
'There's an issue with the new client' Adi interjected the peace in the car
'I've called Maan sir and he isn't picking up but since you were here yesterday, I suppose it'll be better if you're here anyway' the rush and panic in Adi's voice was loud
'I can't' Vicky answered looking at Geet who once again looked out at the green fields
'But we can't, it'll cost Khuranna construction millions plus he's threatening us with a law suit' Adi peeked losing very bit of control he had
'... oh god' Vicky punched the steering wheel feeling frustrated, not once had he suggested to call Maan since he knew his brother was far too involved in everything else to care about work
'Go back Vicky, ask a driver to drop me off home instead' Geet advised once the car was back under control, the inconsiderate punch lead to slight misalignment.
'But' Vicky wanted to fight but Adi's rushed orders bore him down, Vicky had then called his driver to meet them near the closest service station but Geet was still looking out ignoring Vicky's change in plan, for mean time the office memories haunted her being, Maan being the absolute.
'Vicky it's OK' she smiled despite herself as she watched him take an exit from the motorway and head towards the petrol station. His face held remorse and anger.
'Veerji' Meera stopped Maan as he walked away towards the main exit, distorted and disgruntled. The sweetened heart tore into sour pellets of confusion and hurt.
'I have a right to call you veerji, don't I?' she questioned in a soft tone as he stood with his back towards her, there was a slight movement to his head however nothing else even tweaked, maybe he was too ashamed of his tearing eyes or pained face. The tear running parallel to the beat of his hurting heart.
'Then please look at me when I'm speaking' she requested and he earnestly followed, uncaring of the grief that may reflect upon his face. He had been a man to always mask his emotions, however sometimes it became impossible, like now when his worst nightmare became a reality. Dadima had secretly wished for his disappearance from her life.
'Dadima is worried veerji, bas aur kuch nahi' Meera called tugging at his hand delicately, like a younger sister, smiling brightly at his confused demeanour
'Don't worry, everything will be ok' she repeated to the older brother much like how she repeated to the younger brother even if she herself had little belief in her said wordings.
'What the f**k is this?' Sameer shouted over the phone as certain words from the file jumped onto his reddened face. For the next four minutes, he turned mute listening to his lawyer debrief him of the rendition of his dead wife.
'AHHH' he screamed throwing an object to the mirror, as it shattered so did the humane part of his heart. That is if he contained any, next the paper file was ripped to shreds, as a scream resonated his agony. Meera was to be made the sole heir to his wife's throne. Something which just couldn't be possible, after all he married a widow just for the property, he had diligently acted to be the perfect father to her fatherless children and this is how he is repaid. He hadn't planned and schemed for this, Seema wasn't married to an old hotel owner for this, Meera wasn't forced to marry for this and for sure he hadn't married their mother for this. This just wasn't meant to be a part of his plan.
'Meera, Meera, Meera' he tsked as madness took over
'You will regret this darling daughter' he spoke with a freakish laugh, an evil glint entered his eyes with the thought of his youngest daughter
'Sorry not my daughter at all, NOT AT ALL' he shouted louder overturning the glass table, as the glass shards descended around the room he stood in the centre orchestrating a deadly move for both the daughters of his dead wife. He had never intended to be a real father, he was step and step he shall remain.
'Where are you going veerji?' Meera broke after what felt like ages, the silence was unbearable as she looked at him and he looked everywhere but her. Somewhere the lack of communication between the two seemed to have grown awkward.
'To my Geet' he had answered looking to the ground hoping at least she'll hear his truth
'But she's...' she stalled as a look of dread appeared over his face
'Left' she completed as Maan marched through the door
'Veerji' she screamed as the tires burnt across the fatigued roads, within a second the car went out of vision as she ran back to Dadima scared of the consequences for Maan was driving in a crazy speed.
