The director gets to walk away with the credit but there's a lot of input from the director of photography/cinematographer. Filmmaking is a collaborative process. Plus there will be the writers too adding to the movie. He needs to focus on hiring the right people. Some of the TV shows that I watch give their actors a chance to direct in the later seasons and they've talked about how the director of photography made the process so much easier. They made it seem they didn't have to do much 😆

You maybe right but I'm sure during the promotion of the movie Kareena- Ranveer, RamLeela, how it took them so many years to finally work with each other angle would be used.

#Takht is based in the Mughal era. It's history. It's about two warring brothers and it's based on facts as we know them. Beyond that, it's too early to say anything... Opulence-wise and scale-wise it's my biggest to date. It's scary and nerve-wracking." @karanjohar

#Takht is like the K3G of the Mughal era. But it's more extreme, there is more betrayal. It's has the tropes of court politics. It's so rich in texture... The casting is an unusual mix of talent. Each one has never played a part like this and yet each one fit it perfectly." KJo

Takht Will Be The K3G Of The Mughal Era: Karan Johar

The filmmaker on making his biggest film yet, matching up to the bar set by Bhansali for historicals and, giving his writers centre stage

Congratulations on Takht. What can you tell us about the film?

Only that it's based in the Mughal era. It's history. It's about two warring brothers and it's based on facts as we know them. Beyond that, it's too early to say anything.

Would you say that this is your most ambitious project to date?

Yes, opulence-wise and scale-wise it's my biggest to date. It's scary and nerve-wracking. I'm scared every minute of the day. The announcement shook me up. I'm really petrified. It's not the scale. It's also the relationship dynamics. It's like the K3G of the Mughal era. But it's more extreme, there is more betrayal. It's has the tropes of court politics. It's so rich in texture.

You have a spectacular star cast. Were all these actors cast because they fit the role or is it also because you wanted stars?

It's an unusual mix of talent. They are actors who have walked the parallel path, we have the superstar dynamic with Kareena (Kapoor), there's Anil Kapoor who I have never directed before but each actor fits the part to the tee. It's not that I have gone to them because I have access. It's a strange dichotomy. Each one has never played a part like this and yet each one fit it perfectly.

The Takht announcement also created a flutter because you gave your writers Sumit Roy and Hussain Haidry, center stage. Why did you decide to do this?

It was my instinct. I have always said we need to empower writers. Films fail and succeed because of the writing. How can they not be given center stage in a film that is all about the writers? I will execute it but the true leaders in the game are the writers. I really respect a director like Shoojit Sircar who gives Juhi Chaturvedi so much respect and prominence. Raju Hirani does the same with Abhijat Joshi. I've been in the industry for 20 years and it's about time. I didn't even speak to anyone about it. This just had to be done. I wanted to give writers deserving placement.

The bar for historicals in Hindi cinema has been set by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Are you afraid that Takht will be compared to his films?

I would be lying if I didn't admit that the comparison is very challenging. I love Sanjay's aesthetic. The comparison scares me but I hope I can find my own voice. I hope I'm not doomed by comparison. I'm just recovering from Sairatand I can't go there again. I also don't want be overwhelmed by it. He has set the bar high and if I pay homage to his work, I will be proud of it. So much of my cinema pays homage to Yash Chopra but I still gave it my own vision and my own palette. More than the comparison, I'm afraid of not living up to the potential of the narrative. I just hope I can do justice to the material.

I do think that ranveer and Kareena coming together even if she is the sister will be highlighted and the reference to RamLeela and SLB will be used in the media to create a hype. Kareena didn't do RL but still it's in most people's mind that she went out of that one.

SUPER EXCLUSIVE! Kareena Kapoor Khan to play Jahanara Begum; Anil Kapoor to play Shah Jahan in Karan Johar's grand epic period drama Takht!

Bollywood Hungama News Network

Sat Aug 11 14:07:57 IST

It has been reported that Karan Johar's exciting period drama revolves around the darkest and bitter struggles (between Aurangzeb and his brother, heir apparent Dara Shikoh) for the Mughal imperial throne or takht (the peacock throne was a famous jeweled throne that was the seat of the Mughal emperors of India. Also called Takht-i-Jahangir (as called in Urdu) it was built by Mughal emperor Jahangir and is currently located at the Diwan-i-Khas at the Red Fort in Agra.

In a tweet, Karan had described the movie saying, "An incredible story embedded in history... An epic battle for the majestic Mughal throne... A story of a family, of ambition, of greed, of betrayal, of love & of succession... TAKHT is about WAR for LOVE...
The film boasts of a massive star cast including Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. While it has been reported that Vicky will play Aurangzeb and Ranveer will essay the role of his elder brother, Dara Shikoh, Kareena Kapoor Khan will play Jahanara Begum Sahib and Anil Kapoor is said to play their father Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor.
Alia Bhatt is said to play Dara Shikoh's wife, Begum Nadira Banu. They had a happy and successful marriage and Dara was so much in love with his wife that he never married anybody else after her. Vicky Kaushal plays Aurangzeb who married the feisty, spirited Dilras Banu Begum (her role is said to be played by Bhumi Pednekar), who was his first wife, chief consort and favourite, and died a year before he ascended the throne. Jahnavi Kapoor is said to play the role of a young slave girl, called Hira Bai, who Aurangzeb fell in love with. Hirabai died young and he was extremely affected by her death. Aurangzeb also had a favourite concubine, Udaipuri Bai.

Says a trade source, "Apart from her equation with Karan, who is directing the film, Kareena has agreed to be part of such a strong cast also because of the fabulous role she plays. In fact, her role is equal to Ranveer and Vicky's in Takht. She plays Ranveer and Vicky's sister. Jahanara was a highly influential lady at the Mughal court during her father and Aurangzeb's minds who was allowed to speak her mind and give advice. Anil plays their father Shah Jahan, considered to be the most competent of the Mughal Emperors (and had built the Taj Mahal in Agra) but who was imprisoned by Aurangzeb during the war of succession. It's a powerful role too. In a film with a star cast and talent like this, one has to make sure that all the stars get their due.
Like his son Aurangzeb when a war of succession ensued, after his father Jahangir died, Shah Jahan emerged victorious and ascended the throne. But in Aurangzeb's case, Shah Jahan supported his eldest son Dara Shukoh who was later defeated and later killed by Aurangzeb. Jahanara Begum was one of the wealthiest and most powerful women during her father Shah Jahan's rule, who earned her own income from a number of villages and owned gardens. She was the eldest daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan and his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, was also the older sister of Crown prince Dara Shikoh and Emperor Aurangzeb and became the First Lady (Padshah Begum) of the Mughal Empire (after her mother died), at the young age of 17. She brought up her siblings and helped her father to get out of mourning. Jahanara was also instrumental in arranging Dara Shikoh's marriage to Begum Nadira Banu.
Jahanara Begum was an extremely powerful at the Mughal Court, where Shah Jahan entrusted her with charge of the Imperial Seal and took her advice on administrative and political issues. Unlike the other royal princesses, she lived in her own palace, and not Agra Fort. When the war of succession broke out, Jahanara supported her brother Dara Shikoh and Shah Jahan asked Jahanara to intervene. After Aurangzeb ascended the takht, she joined her father in imprisonment at the Agra Fort, and looked after him until his death (1666). But after their father's death she and Aurangzeb patched up and he gave her the title, Empress of Princesses.

Kareena seems to have a really gud role in the film, she is the link between the two brothers, she raised them after thier mother died, and her father shah jahan appointed her a high ranking in the mughal court, she was a powerful woman

Shah jahan and Jahanara supported Dara Shikoh, its gonna hav lots of family drama

I think Dara Shikoh and Nadira Banu's will be the love story that will be highlighted in the film, they were committed to each other only, and interesting how it was Jahanara that arranged thier marriage

so bhumi is playing Aurangzebs first wife, and jhanvi is playing a slave girl who was his lover
