Few days back I was watching KJo's take on one of the scenes from Kuch Kuch and he was almost rolling his eyes and commenting in a salty manner about his own work.. Like he was so immature back then, y did he make such a cheesy muvi.. when in fact his previous work is what we remember and love even today.. What he makes today IMO is much worse crap..

Today again I was watching Ayan Mukherjee's interview and he was doing the same thing with Wake up Sid.. I liked both of his films so far, but WUS I just looove and connect to.. but today hearing him speak about the movie completely broke my heart.. He thinks YJHD is much complex and better product.. He thinks WUS music was average and Ranbir Konkona pairing was very odd 😕 Just bcoz YJHD earned more, he thinks ppl are interested in that kind of glitzy stuff and so it broke my heart to realize, he wont be making WUS kind of muvi any time soon.. I am still hopeful about Bramhastra only bcoz of his involvement... but still somewhere I think he has lost his original raw take/perspective on life which he brought in his first film..

Y do u guys think filmmakers diss their previous films which made them successfull in the first place?

Ayan is disillusioned. He was too upset with the failure and has made the assumption that it was a bad film. The problem happens when people expect every film to make the same amount of money. It's not possible -- every film will have a cap depending on genre, starcast, time period, and so many other things. They can of course surprise majorly but even that has a limit. A film like WUS will never make the same amount of money as a YJHD. It has nothing to do with the merit of the film. YJHD is just a typical fun movie. There is nothing complex or even remotely original about it. I bet a WUS would do much better today than it did 10 years ago.
KJo is another story. I think his older self simply can't relate to the teen Archie comics type feel of KKHH. He also has a different idea about life and love given his experiences over the last 20 years. It's a real pity because KKHH is more heart than any of KJo's recent films.
Plus he probably also thinks it helps him fit in better and look cooler to trash the film like others. Or maybe it's a defense mechanism...trash it yourself so someone else doesn't.

I think a director's most honest, naive, sensitive work is always their first film. They lose that innocence as they make more films. They make better movies later on as well, but the first is typically something else.

Just the way some of us cringe at our old photographs.

People grow and sometimes cannot relate with their old selves anymore. That's when they try to distance themselves from their earlier works.

It's not just filmmakers, it's everyone especially artists.
As you get better at your craft, you learn new things, technical & non- technical. You learn how to do things better. It takes years to master a craft and as you learn new things or better things, the natural reaction when looking back at something is...OMG! I was terrible or I had no clue what I was doing. As a landscape architect, I feel the same way when I look back at my older work.

WHAT?! I can't believe Ayaan is talking shit about WUS. It was his BEST work. There is no two ways about it. and Ranbir and Konkana's pairing was fresh, plus the music was heavenly. That rain scene in the end with the background music is one of my all time favorite ending scenes. I have been waiting to see a film like WUS from him again, to think he thinks Yjhd is better?! On what level? and more complex?! He has got to be kidding me. I thought bunny was a confused man child, his story wasn't explored well at all, and besides the trio's friendship, everything else was superficial in the film. Yes, it was a good commercial film that managed to entertain people, but how in the world can it be better than the rawness and realness of WUS?! The self discovery of sid and his initial aimlessness were genuine in that movie. I related so much to him having no purpose in life and slowly finding that something in photography and starting to really do something with his life. And his and aisha's story was so subtle and beautiful. They were in love by the end, but there were no dramatic declarations, it all happened so gradually and naturally. And the music was sone pe suhaga, that iktara song is one of my all time favorites. It goes so well with the soothing vibe of the movie. I can go on and on about this movie. Ayaan needs to get out of the KJO camp because W*F is he even thinking at this point?! He has completely lost it... 😳

Ayaan calling WUS a bad film is just as bad as Ranbir trashing Rocket Singh. They are both disillusioned and think that anything that makes money is good. Am sure that's not what they actually believe subconsciously and it will probably change after they are less disillusioned by their failures 😆 KJo is a different specimen altogether. Am sure he thinks he is coming across as cool and badass by bashing his past successful work. At least those films had heart unlike his latest ones 😆

I think it's natural, not only for filmmakers or artists, but also for common people. We grow and change at each stage of our life, and many times we regret our past decisions. We often say after years that, oh..how foolish I was to do this thing, what was I thinking..

It happens more in the field of art, because there people take alot of time in learning and mastering their talent. As people learn new things, they realize how flawed and naive their past work is, which embarrasses them and they try their best not to repeat it.

Also an artist is the worst person to judge his/her work. Critics and the audience only see the finished product of a film. They don't see the whole complex process behind it's making. But a person who is involved in the whole process of filmmaking, doesn't only see it as a finished product. They see their finished product as a vision, which looked great in their mind when it first came, but somehow, they weren't able to put that vision into reality.
Whenever I watch YJHD, I notice that there could've been alot of things done with the characters of Naina, Bunny, Avi and Aditi. All four characters were relatable and had their own story to tell. Maybe Ayan had a very good idea on paper, but ended up commercializing the film to get box office success.
