"Woh ja chuka hain." Revealed an horrified Jhanvi.
Gauri's heart fell into her stomach listening to Jhanvi as the fear started gripping her heart.
"What do you mean by ja chuka hain ? Kahan gaya woh ?" Tej roared, not understanding what is happening.
"He has left the house with a letter behind, saying he doesn't want to marry Gauri." Jhanvi cried breaking the news.
Tears threatened to cascade down her eyes as she realized her groom is not going to arrive. She could hear the people talking about her. Some of them are looking at her with sympathy while the others are busy calling her names. She could hear Jhanvi cursing her for causing her son to leave the house. Beside Jhanvi, sat a crestfallen Tej who seems to be infuriated also. Her fear intensified and heart stopped pumping blood for a moment as she presumed, Tej is thinking her to be the reason behind the crucial step of his son.
Is he blaming her for the same ? Is she at fault ? Should she be blamed for everything happening ? No. It can never be her fault.
Being an orphan, she never dreamt of getting married into an affluent family. Neither she ever wanted an Oberoi as her husband. It was Tej who came to her, asking her hand for his son. She was hesitant to take in his proposal, but too scared to ask him go back. It was him who helped her being graduated. It was him who got her a job in Oberoi Industry to help her getting into her own feet. It was him who always supported her and boasted her confidence. She had not seen her parents. She couldn't even remember how they looked. It was him who loved her as his own daughter. She was indebted to him for the love and affection he had showered her with. For the same reason, she couldn't say no to the man who has given her everything she needed and asked for nothing in return.
It was Tej Singh Oberoi's love and affection that got Gauri's consent for the marriage. She was willing to marry the Casanova Singh Oberoi as they called him. Only because of Tej. And she won't be able to bear if Tej blames her.
Gauri was feeling humiliated as well as cheated. Humiliated to hear the filth people were prattling about her. And cheated being abandoned by her groom. She couldn't stay at the place any longer, where people talk rubbish about her and think her to be a gold digger. She couldn't stay at the place where her dignity is being played with.
She stood up wiping away the warm tears dropping down, ready to leave, when Tej stopped her. "Kahan ja rahi ho ?" He asked, stopping her in track.
Gauri turned around to find Tej approaching her. "Aapne ghar. Aab yahan humara kya kam ?" She replied in a barely audible voice.
"You cannot leave. Shaadi abhi baki hain." Tej said as he dragged her towards the mandap and gestured her to sit.
"What are you saying ? How can the wedding take place when the groom, my son has left ?" Jhanvi reminded him as she cried thinking about what her baby boy was doing all alone.
"Your one son has left, leaving his bride in the mandap. But another son is still here."
Jhanvi gasped as she could figure out what was going on her husband's head and she prayed to her God to not let that happen. "Kya matlab hain tumhara, Tej ?" She tried to keep herself as calm as possible.
A pregnant silence followed as everyone, including Gauri waited for Tej's answer. After what seemed like eternity, Tej broke the silence. "Omkara karega Gauri se shaadi." He announced, shocking everyone.
Omkara, who was standing in a corner till now, trying to decipher what was happening in his house, is now found bewildered. He has returned from his art exhibition just a day before the marriage ceremony. He wasn't even prepared to attend his brother's wedding. And out of nowhere his father announced his wedding. That too, with someone he barely knows.
He cannot marry now. He doesn't want to marry now. "But dad, how can I marry someone I don't even know properly ?" He tried to take a stand for himself, only to be stopped by his father.
"Mujhe tumse baat karna hain, Omkara. Follow me to the study." Tej ordered as he moved towards the study.
Omkara followed him like a puppy, hoping to make his father understand that he isn't prepared to get into a lifelong relationship like marriage. Not now at least.
Gauri froze in her place when Tej announced her wedding with Omkara as she didn't know how to react or what to say. She, with much difficulty, got herself ready for her marriage with Rudra Singh Oberoi. She somehow felt she should settle down in her life. She always craved for a family and getting married can give her a family to call her own. But everything happening around her is only making her feel as if she isn't destined to have a family.
How can she think of marriage now, when her groom has left her in the mandap ? How can she expect a man like Omkara to marry her ? She had known him for a long time though they never got a chance to talk. He definitely is a good man to settle down with. But a fact remain unsaid that she shouldn't wave dreams when she knows those will be teared apart. Omkara would never agree to marry her knowing she belongs to no class. Maybe he would reject her just like his brother did. All she could do now is to pray to her Shankarji to save her from the humiliation. She doesn't want another rejection from Omkara as she is still in shock with Rudra's decision.
Tej closed the door behind as Omkara dashed into the study. "Om." He used his sweetest tone to grab his already concentrated son's attention.
Omkara closed his eyes, sighing as he silently asked his father to continue.
"Mujhe laga Rudra ki shaadi karwa dene se usme thodi si maturity ajayegi. Maine socha ki Gauri usse zimmedar bana dega. But I was wrong. Rudra kabhi yeh shadi nehi chahta tha. He wanted to fly away to Italy to persuade his career as a model. It was me who blackmailed him into the marriage, thinking about his own good. But I don't know where I went wrong." Tej looked embarrassed, disclosing everything to Omkara.
Omkara looked at him shocked. He never knew his father was blackmailing his brother. But he knows he would never do anything wrong to his brother. He put a hand on his father's shoulder as he reached him. "It's not your fault, Dad. Apne Rudra ki bhalai soch ke yeh sab kiya. Lekin aapka tareeka zaroor galat tha. You shouldn't have forced him to an unwanted relationship." He said finally what he felt.
"I know I was wrong. I know I'm at fault. But Gauri is innocent. Uski koyi galti nehi hain. She shouldn't suffer for mine and my son's wrong decisions.." Tej paused as he took Omkara's hands in his before continuing. "I know you are not ready for a marriage now. But Om, please don't say a no to this marriage." Tej almost pleaded to his son as he felt helpless.
Omkara was blown away seeing his father begging. "Dad.." He tried to stop Tej only to be interrupted by him. "Maine kabhi bhi aapne faisle tumpe thopne ki koshish nehi ki. Humesha tumhe support kiya, apne zindagi ki faise khud lene ki azaadi di. I never forced you into business knowing your interest in arts. I never questioned your decisions. Neither I asked for anything from you. But today, I'm joining my hands before you.." Tej begged as he folded his hands.
"Stop doing this, Dad. Please !" Omkara wasn't ready to witness this side of his father.
"Don't stop me, Omkara. I need to do this. For Gauri. For my family. I cannot let the people point their finger out at her. She's nowhere at fault. She has already suffered so much. I cannot add more to her sufferings by letting her go through the humiliations. Please, Om. Please marry her." Tej was on the verge of tears as he thought about Gauri. She would be broken beyond repair after today if left alone. He cannot let the girl he considered his daughter to go through affliction, when he himself had promised her of happiness. He knows Omkara would give her everything she deserves. Only if Omkara was ready earlier, he would've asked him to marry Gauri.
"Please beta, mana matt karna. Gauri bohot achhi ladki hain. I always wanted to keep her to myself as my daughter. But knowing it's not possible, I decided to make her my daughter in law. Sach kahoon toh main hamesha se chahta tha ki Gauri ki shadi tumse ho. Lekin tum shadi ke liye taiyyar nehi the. That's why I had to force Rudra. Waise bhi, woh hat se nikal chuka tha. He was busy with club, parties, girlfriends. I thought getting him married would help getting him matured. Sab meri galti hain. I was being selfish. Then why should Gauri suffer in all these ?" Tej was now crying.
Omkara didn't know what to do as he simply hugged him to calm him down. "Stop blaming yourself, Dad."
Tej breathed in and out in a process to cool himself down. He came out of his son's embrace as he felt assured. "Omkara, I promise you'll never regret marrying Gauri. Just give me a chance. Give her a chance."
Omkara went silent hearing his father. True that he doesn't want to get married anytime soon. But he cannot let his father beg before him for something when he has given him everything without asking. He can do everything for the best father of the world. Moreover he felt no harm in giving his life a chance. "Theek hain. Main Gauri se shaadi karoonga." Omkara said with finality, making his father sigh in relief as he hugged his son again, but this time contented.
Gauri settled herself on the bed of Omkara as her body was begging for rest after the hectic day. She is still astounded of herself thinking about how she gave into Tej's request to Marry Omkara so easily. She closed her eyes leaning into the headboard as the conversation with Tej recurred in her mind.
"Omkara will marry you." Tej said with a bright smile adoring his face.
"Lekin hum kaise unse shadi kar le ?" Gauri said shocked.
"Trust me when I say Omkara can be much better than Rudra as a husband. Woh tumhe bohot khush rakhega." He caressed her hair as he assured her.
"Kya woh apni marzi se humse shadi kar rahe hain ?" Gauri wasn't ready to be a burden on someone.
"Haan. I talked to him, Gauri. You can trust me with your future. Main kabhi apni beti ka bura nehi chahoonga."
Gauri smiled in tears listening to Tej as she hugged him.
Finally she is married to Omkara. She doesn't know whether to be happy or worried. What if she fails as Omkara's wife ? What if nothing click between them ? What if she's left alone again ? She was engrossed with her thoughts when she heard a noise of opening the door. She jumped from the bed as Omkara entered the room.
"Relax. Make yourself comfortable. Yeh tumhara bhi kamra hain." Omkara smiled taking away her nervousness.
Gauri sat in a corner of the bed as the awkwardness followed. Her eyes rested on the cold tilled floor as she started fidgeting with her dupatta.
"Main change karke ata hoon. Tum bhi change karlo. You must be tired." Omkara left for the washroom leaving a smiling Gauri behind. She expected it to be difficult to adjust in a different atmosphere. But her husband is making it easier by cooperating with her. Life with him is not going to be that complicated' she thought as started removing her heavy jewelleries.
Omkara returned from the washroom to find her laid on the bed. He took his place beside her as both stared each other. Before Omkara could wish her good night she blurt out. "Thank you."
He furrowed his temple confused.
"Thank you for marrying me." She hesitated not know how Omkara is going to react.
Omkara shook his head at his naive wife. His father was right. The woman carries her heart in her mouth. "You don't have to thank me, Gauri. I admit I wasn't ready for a marriage. But when we're man and wife, I'll try my best to be a good life partner of yours." He placed his hand on hers, assuring.
Gauri felt as if something heavy is removed from her chest. She sighed as she smiled, placing her another hand on their clasped hands.
Morning started with a few stolen glances as both got ready for breakfast. Gauri was excited for her first day as daughter in law of Oberoi family. They both reached the breakfast table hand in hand where they found Tej and Jhanvi already seated. Gauri touched Tej's feet as Omkara wished his father good morning. She was about to approach Jhanvi for blessing when she pushed her away. "Stay away from me, you homebreaker." Jhanvi said angered making Gauri gasp.
"Yeh kya tareeka hain, Jhanvi ?" Tej lost it seeing his wife uttering rubbish.
"Yeh bilkul sahi tareeka hain. Iss ladki ki wajah se mera beta ghar chod ke chala gaya. My Rudra would've been with me if she wasn't here." Jhanvi cried as she cursed Gauri.
"How can you blame Gauri for this ? Tumhara beta gadha hain jo Gauri jaisi ladki ko chod ke chala gaya. Be thankful that she's still being nice with us. Uski jagah koyi aur hoti toh Rudra ne jo kiya uske bad humse bhi nafrat karti." He felt disgusted with his own wife for having such sloping thoughts.
"I don't care anything you say, Tej. I just don't want this girl in my house. Agar yeh rahi toh main iss ghar mein nehi rahoongi." Jhanvi said shocking everyone.
Silent tears made their way down to Gauri's cheeks as she frozed in her place. She looked at Omkara hoping him to say something for her. She isn't what Jhanvi thinks of her. She never wanted to break a family. But how to make her believe ? She closed her eyes hurt and embarrassed, allowing the warm drops to cascade down. Her eyes flickered open feeling someone holding her wrist. She stared into the dark orbs of her husband who is now looking at her. "Omkaraji, hum.." She tried to defend herself only to be shushed by him.
"Mom kahi nehi jayegi. Koyi iss ghar se jayega toh woh hain Gauri."
Gauri's heart skipped a beat as she hearkened Omkara.
"Lekin Gauri akeli nehi jayegi. Even I'll leave the house along with her." He tightened his hold around her wrist and she looked at him amused.
"Maine Gauri se shadi ki hain. Uska saath dena meri responsibility hain. Agar woh iss ghar se chale jane se aap khush ho, Mom, toh yeh hi sahi. Lekin main usse akela nehi chod sakta." Omkara dragged Gauri to their room once he announced his decision. Gauri could see a infuriated Jhanvi stomping her feet and a smiling Tej behind as they headed towards their room.
Finally she realised, she wasn't wrong deciding to marry Omkara.
