Akshay Kumar Deletes Tweet on Fuel Price Hike, Draws Flak

By Eshwar Gole
May 22, 2018 at 01:10 PM IST

While peak summer is weighing on Indians across the country, the BJP is facing a one-of-a-kind heatwave severe criticism for its inability to contain surging fuel prices. On its ninth day now, petrol and diesel prices have shot up exponentially, burning a hole in the aam aadmi's pocket. But the issue has also landed Bollywood's Khiladi No.1' aka Akshay Kumar in a controversy.

Guys, I think it's time to clean up your bicycles and hit the road! As per sources, expecting another petrol price hike.
Akshy Kumar's tweet in 2012, now deleted.

This is what Kumar tweeted in 2012 after fuel prices hit the roof. The Bollywood star, who is known to voice his opinion on many issues, was also publicly vocal about the fuel price hike back then.

Akshy Kumar's tweet in 2012, now deleted.

A parody account on Twitter by the name of Unofficial Sususwamy' retweeted his tweet from 2012.

Unofficial Sususwamy

@swamv39

Akshay Sir, Big Fan! Can you please lend me your bycycle? I'll get it cleaned. https://twitter.com/akshaykumar/status/174096820476190720 ...

However, the tweet was soon found to be deleted, which irked many. Why the actor decided to delete the tweet is best known to him. But Twitterati was clearly not pleased with people calling him names like ABVP supporter' and Canadian citizen'.

Why did @akshaykumar delete this tweet? https://twitter.com/swamv39/status/998200240141303809 ...

Hello @akshaykumar why have you deleted this old tweet of yours? At the rate we are going you'll have to delete all political tweets before May 2014

Niraj Bhatia@bhatia_niraj23

The ABVP Pracharak , Canadian Citizen , Padma Shri @akshaykumar Has Deleted His Tweet Regarding #Petrol Price Hike .. Request Him To Re-tweet it back As We Have Reached At Highest #FuelPrice Now .. Or is like 'sarkar ka chakkar babu bhaiyya' .. !

Mr Certitude@Swapzz

Wonder why .@akshaykumar deleted this tweet.

Maybe he doesn't have the STREANH to face public with increasing #petrolpricehike ?

Manisha Makhija@makhija_mm

I'm surprised why is nobody talking about the record high prices of Petrol & Diesel ? Had this been happening under Congress, .. ahh never mind !! And look who deleted his old tweet from 2012 abt the petrol price hike, Mr @akshaykumar !! God damn Chamchas ! #FuelPriceHike

Some other tweets of Kumar that were put during the UPA government's regime also resurfaced.

Akshay Kumar
@akshaykumar

Couldn't even get to my house at nite for all of Mumbai was queuing up for #Petrol before the prices rocketed again.

Akshay Kumar
@akshaykumar

When I saw Rs. 62 trending, I thought it must be either the reduced petrol price or some new scam of Rs. 62 crores but... http://say.ly/igf3L7r

Kumar wasn't the only Bollywood actor who drew flak for his silence on the issue. Many on Twitter shared screenshots of previous tweets by actors like Amitabh bachchan and Anupam Kher and questioned their silence.

@SanjeevINC

The price of petrol and diesel in the Modi government is skyrocketing, inflation is at its peak level,

Before 2014, Amitabh, Ashok Pandit, Vivek Agnihotri, Akshay Kumar and Anupam Kher, who oppose rising prices of petrol and diesel, why silent? #FuelLootBySuitBoot @IYC

Rajneesh R. Gaikwad@rgaikwad7

@SrBachchan @akshaykumar @AnupamPKher @ashokepandit @vivekagnihotri Where are you guys ? Cycling... To tweet on petrol price, fingers are needed, but your's are busy somewhere else? https://twitter.com/ashoswai/status/998602943279632385 ...

SamSays@samjawed65

Not even asked to bend, yet they crawled... Akshay Kumar deletes old tweet on petrol price hike. https://www.altnews.in/akshay-kumar-deletes-old-tweet-on-cleaning-up-bicycles-to-counter-rising-fuel-prices/ ...

Gangaram Raju@gangaram_raju

@SrBachchan and @akshaykumar both are spineless characters of Bollywood. Petrol price is all-time high, ppl are suffering, they should have protested as they did in the past, instead choose to keep silent. Their double standards and hypocrisy exposed.

Whether the comments of Bollywood actors are relevant on the issue or not is a subjective matter. But Akshay Kumar's silence and his deletion of the Tweet has certainly not gone down well with Twitter users.

Superstar @akshaykumar deletes his outrage tweet on rising fuel prices, as it could have disappointed our soldiers at the front. No other foreigner cares for Indian Army this much.

Akshay Kumar deletes old tweet on cleaning up bicycles' to counter rising fuel prices

"Guys, I think it's time to clean up your bicycles and hit the road! As per sources, expecting another petrol price hike. Akshay Kumar's tweet on rising petrol prices is timeless. It is as applicable today as it was in 2012 when Akshay Kumar tweeted it. This old tweet was dug out by Twitter users but before everyone could have a good laugh, Akshay Kumar decided to delete it.

We wonder what made Akshay Kumar delete his tweet. Is it because he doesn't want to be seen as critical of the BJP government? Is it because he doesn't want people to learn about his double standards? The reasons for deleting the tweet are best known to him.

Since Akshay Kumar doesn't want people to see this tweet, he may not be very pleased to know that his tweet is archived for posterity.

Many of those who shared jokes and witty one-liners on social media before 2014 have fallen silent now. So much so that Twitter users compete with each other to dig out old tweets and question the hypocrisy behind their silence.

Prominent Bollywood stars who are silent now include Amitabh Bachchan who has not cracked any petrol joke after 2014.

Here is a parting gift for Akshay Kumar. A tweet he forgot to delete.

Akshay Kumar@akshaykumar

Couldn't even get to my house at nite for all of Mumbai was queuing up for #petrol before the prices rocketed again.

Now that there is a BJP government in the Centre, we hope that Akshay Kumar is coping well with rocketing petrol prices. We wish him luck.

Am thinking of all the bravehearts from Sr Bachchan to Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher to Chetan Bhagat, Ramdev to Sri Fraud who piled on to Dr Manmohan Singh for the petrol price hikes. But not a squeak against Modi. What happened to the black belts, big talk, and heroics?

This is the thing with bhakts.

They pretend to be patriotic, but their real agenda isn't trying to keep the country united or solving people's problems. It is purely a hateful, divisive game they play for their own selfish gains. And this they do under the garb of "loving their country".

the worst thing that i hate about anyone is dual nature

if u r a supporter of someone ...be open about it...give ur reasons

explain why u r not speaking now

even admit bad decisions of ur favorite

but what the heck is need for this cunningness...sometimes i am amazed how low these people are in real life and we treat them as stars

why is it difficult to be honest...

reason is that in the end MONEY is their life..they want to please everyone..they want to support but not offend the opposite side..as long as cash is flowing..they will become social worker..will get in pain about women issues..toilet issue...

I am not someone who uses gaalis...but if i had to lol..then I would have given few to these dual natured...cunning foxes like akshay
