Employee leaving a job without orally committed two weeks in anyway unethical?

Market is in recession, employers in the name of cost cutting are slacking employee without a second thought, yet demanding employees cum contractors give a 2 weeks notice before leaving orelse bad reference....unfair?

If employers are free to sack resources, even employee's are ready to walk out of job even though they hold key position, why should they care about anything when decided to move out, is this move unethical?

Wooow you can get away with 2 weeks notice.... we had a rule of 3 months notice in india ....

I left my back with 2 weeks notice and still i am seeking the letter of relieving

how unprofessional can the bank be... they did not contact me for 2 years despite I writing them to contact if any dues from me are there for short notice... and they write a letter one day before being taken over my IOB.... I reply to the letter by fax and then come to know that the number has stopped operating... now again there is no communication and 3 years after the resignation i am still awaiting their response and relieving letter

Completely depends on who the employer is. If your employer has treated you with respect, paid you well, given you benefits and opportunities. You owe it to your employer to give a good amount of notice and even train a replacement whenever possible.

If your employer has treated you poorly. Not respected your input. Underpaid and overworked you. Then you are right in searching better prospects and two weeks notice is not necesscary.

However, giving two weeks notice is always a sound practice no matter what and never ever ever quit without notice. It reflects good on your integrity as a person. Many employers will ask how you quit your previous job and even verify if you quit with or without notice. No one wants an irresponsible employee who will quit with short notice or none at all.

We have to give six-months' notice 😆

@RTH's response - completely agree with you. I have a friend who has been treated rather unfairly by her employers. She has a job offer right now, but ethically she doesn't want to quit in the middle of the semester.

Very enethical and stupid imo.. No matter what , your ex-employer will be on your resume(unless one lies there too) and and future employers will check with them for references. besides why would anyone want to burn bridges when moving on? it is all about networking and never know when one will cross path with them. with good relations with ex one may be able to moonlight with them on independent projects...Some employment contracts clearly state that without 2-4 week required written notice, employee can loose unused benefits like vacation time/pay, bonus etc..

ideally speaking, it shd go both ways. if the company can show u the door w/o any notice, then the employee shd have that privilege too. if company gives u 3 mths notice before laying u off...u shd also give 3 mths notice b4 leaving them 😆

i feel one shd not burn their bridges. so give adequate notice based on the trend where u r living/working. now, if the bridges r already broken, damaged and burnt to cinders...it really doesn't matter then.

IMO it really depends on what sort of a relationship you share with your employer. If your employer is not going to hold grudges about you leaving before your 2 weeks notice and you aren't going to burn any bridges then it's fine. However, if your employer on the other hand is going to hold it against you and it's going to hurt your chances in the future, then it's better to give that notice and hold off.

Now on the other hand, if you do decide to leave, ethically, you should have some sort of a transition plan in place so your employer (especially if you are in a higher up position) isn't left high and dry.

might be a bit unethical, but i think it's fine. just give a good sob story. maa beemar hai, bacha garib hai, biwi bhaag gayee, ghar baith kar sabka dekh bhal karna hai. what's a lil bit of lying to an employer anyway? wouldn't be the first time, would it? 😉

as for 6 months, by then, wldnt it have been time to move on from that firm too? so what shld one do? engage in forward job hopping? 😛 ab forward trading ho sakta hai, toh forward job hopping kyoon naheen?😆
