The problem with the movies mentioned by the forum members is- as I see it- that the films lacked to get traction to the public. The causes could be: the main actors are unknown, disliked at that particular moment by masses, or overlooked for another actor/movie, movies clashing.. or a big blockbuster taking the 'lights' off from an indie-type movie.
Why lacking traction?-perhaps the public didn't like much the screenplay, the music, the events described. Perhaps WOM wasn't strong enough from advertising and first shows..perhaps people were saving their money for an up and coming movie they were more interested in watching. Sometimes the subject might not be enticing enough. Sometimes the financial situation could affect box office.
The truth is that the Indian cinemagoer is still attracted to huge masala movie genre, to action genre.
If they have to choose between an October, say, and a Baaghi2, they will most likely choose Baaghi2.
Not saying everyone, but a BIG majority would.
Cinemagoers want to be entertained and forget their day to day miseries.
If the actors are relatively unknown, new, this also factors in, as moviegoers will go for the better known actor movie that starts say, in a week, than go for a 'boring' movie with a newbie actor that is running in theatres this week.
Sometimes going to a movie, even if excellent, that would remind them of poverty, not having their loved ones around anymore, losing the girl they loved to another guy -well, many might choose not to go there and reopen old wounds.
