You hear their hit tracks in restaurants, gyms and stadiums but singers say they don't get a penny of royalty. But things are changing. Now, for the first time, around 700-odd vocalists have got their dues

About a month ago, singer Aditi Singh Sharma walked into a recording studio to find the party anthem, Sooraj Dooba Hai, being intensely discussed. She exclaimed instinctively: "Oh, that's my song! The music makers in the room corrected her: It's (the composer) Amaal Mallik's song. "There was something so wrong with that sentence, she recounts. "If I'm not entitled to a song I've sung, what am I left with? Similarly, a hit track is called a Ranbir-Deepika song. No one calls it the Vishal Dadlani-Shalmali Kholgade song. As long as the issue of royalty remains unresolved, singers will continue to be ignored.

Music-Math

Singers, they're known for speaking out on civil rights, politics, climate change and peace. Not so much for activism within their own industry or the disharmony beneath the surface. While film producers and music companies have been getting their share of profit from radio stations, TV channels, and online sites, singers like Aditifeel they are being rewarded less and less.

That may be changing now. After a long battle to secure royalty, the Indian Singers' Rights Association (ISRA), a copyright collection society established in 2013, was able to collect a sum of Rs 52 lakh and distribute it among 730 singers for the first time.

"This is for 2016-17. For the year ending March 2018, we've already collected around Rs 1 crore, which too will soon be distributed, explains Sanjay Tandon, CEO of ISRA. "What artistes have received maybe a nominal amount but it's a start.
Aditi, among the first batch of royalty recipients, says it's a huge leap for singers. Unlike the previous generation of singers, careers these days are short-lived with new voices emerging every day. And not everyone does live shows where the money is better. "I'd probably have earned more in royalty than my fee for singing the song Dilli Dilli (in No One Killed Jessica) that was played everywhere in Delhi for two years since its release in 2010, says Aditi.

Singer Sonu Nigam believes it is about giving singers their due respect and a sense of security. "Our fight wasn't with music labels but what was due to us, explains the singer, who along with Sunidhi Chauhan, had once walked out of the film Heartless when asked to sign away their royalty rights.
The question of equitable share of revenues dates back to the 90s when someone at a function called singers vocal instruments'. To fix this anomaly, singers like Lata Mangeshkar, Sonu Nigam, Alka Yagnik and Tandon banded together and took up the matter with the government.

In what was hailed as a landmark amendment in the Copyright Act of 1957, Performer's Right' came into effect in June 2012. The singer was granted economic rights, independent of the composer and songwriter. This meant that once a singer had recorded an original song, for the next 50 years, everyone except the producer needed their consent and would have to pay royalty to play or perform their song in public. Be it at a restaurant or gym, on radio and television, streamed through internet, or played by DJs.

"Till then it was a zamindari system where the tune belonged to the composer, the song to the lyricist and sound recording to the music company. Singers weren't considered owners of copyright or entitled to any royalty. Starting June 21, 2012, they were added as a fourth party, entitled to 50% of whatever anyone earned worldwide using their voice, explains Tandon.

& what about those songs which are copied from foreign singers without permission by Bollywood composers. Bollywood copies even steals design of posters of foreign filmsBindaasNeha

Despite the recent triumphs, Tandon says the struggle to get royalty from television, radio and online streaming platforms still continues. "We can't get complacent. They are the ones with the lion's share of the music industry's total revenue, he says, pointing at the plight of older singers who have died in penury in the past. "Rajkumari Dubey and Mubarak Begum did not have money to even meet their basic needs. Financial aid by way of royalty could have helped them, states Tandon

Sonu Nigam reply to Amal on the issue of singers earning more than composers
Thank you family for standing by what is right.. May the people who so are Rolling On The Floor Laughing at the thought of singers 'Supposed' to get Royalties, take a step back with humility that such a balance is good for the entire fraternity.
One new prolific lyricist, whom I quite liked on a personal level, mentioned the amount a singer charges for concerts against what he makes... Another composer, chose to demean singers further...
You wanna earn more than the singers, please become A R Rehman.. He has made more money than singers due to his class and talent. And not by disparaging the money somebody else is making.
And lastly, I must have sung 0.1 percent of the total hit songs produced in the last 10 years. (No prizes for guessing why.) Yet I charge Big! Why? Think...
My advice is stop taking credit for singers making money. No body makes or breaks anyone.. It's the Almighty. Your own Karma.. Your own goodness in thoughts... Singers make money because it's them and not you who can sing on stage for hours... Attract 1000s of people to buy tickets to get entertained... Period... And not all singers whom YOU THE ALMIGHTY have MADE, make the same money... Is the Musical Facebook Kings of Creativity Intelligentsia listening? .
And if you were talking about singers who give mere lip services to your amazing tracks on stage, then the responsibility of polluting music lies on you first for making non singers sing your song in the very first place! Why do you even agree to make a mediocre singer sing your song..? Why don't you have the guts to fight back? Refuse! Hold your heads high! You choose mediocrity, break the backs of the credibles, and then humiliate the entire fraternity! How dare you guys put the blame of what should be called as your own lack of spine, on singers? How dare you RIDICULE a constitutional right of royalty that we have strived for, from when you were in your diapers, that we have finally been able to achieve?
Aspire to be the best in your own field instead of demeaning other crafts. How can I compare my earnings to, say a Music company's earning? I should have aimed to be a music company owner for me to be able to make that kind of a money.. I have to therefore always compare myself with singers... Or entertainers..!
By calling yourself superior than singers or actors or music companies, you only exhibit your own complex and negativity. And puts you in the list of people who are not 'Good Human Beings'. Life is supposed to be lived holding other people's hands.. Not pulling them down.
Ummeed hai aap is soch pe Amal karenge.

here it is what amal said ..

https://youtu.be/qI7Y_V0usfg : Every one who wants to be educated about copyrights, watch this video.

I spent some time giving thought to what is being said. I even read my own post again, to be sure.

I can't see why people fail to realize that there is no demeaning of another's craft but it simply consists of a stand against the way things are.

Yes, this is true that I will speak against the disparity in respect and acknowledgement (whether monetary or social) received as the Maker of a song rather than wait and do so only once I have the body of work like Mr. Rahman does.

I wonder why musical skills are being questioned here when all we seek is a change in the system. I haven't made a personal remark at anybody's personal abilities to carry out their artform and therefore I wouldn't want the same to come my way.

Anyway, The clear message given out from my post was an appeal to a system, asking them to respect each one equally and not a certain craft as the higher deal.

I think there's nothing wrong in asking for so much. It's funny but I have a young bunch of budding musicians who when asked, only eventually want to be singers.

Isn't it strange?

When there are other parties involved in a song, why would a person only choose to be a singer?

It's because of the way Composers are promoted (or not promoted) in this country.

So my plight in all this is simply so much, we must do what it takes to create a system where everybody is an equal contributor to a song. Especially, the makers.

I haven't called myself superior to anybody and I wouldn't dare to make that mistake and create a complacent attitude.

In closing I'd only like to say that everybody is right in what they say.I'm glad atleast some one took the onus to discuss and explain themselves.

I don't wish to be pulled up for something I haven't meant to convey. I'm all of answering whoever has questions regarding my post once they completely get the meaning behind it.

Misconstruing only leads to chaos and confusion and we may just find ourselves fighting amongst each other. It won't bring good, neither personal remarks, nor misconstruing.

Read carefully and you'll notice that I am not against a singer getting something, I am against a composer and other contributors not getting theirs. It refers to speaking against a system that has developed over the ages.

I wonder why I'm asked to first become Mr. Rahman and then ask for my dues.

If one even thinks about it logically, the Composers & Lyricists are the people due to whom the particular song even exists and he/she is hardly known or paid.

Why shouldn't someone address this?

Just because they can't pull a 1000 people for a show?

There is no doubt that obviously it is your talent and credibility as a performer that gets you your shows and events.

But it's the creators who made the song that pulled those thousands of people who came to listen to you...

This is also a huge reason why composers sing their own songs today and guess what?

They're condemned for that as well !!!

Again, before I'm misconstrued again by my respected fellowmen, I am not putting any of you down. But I see no harm in putting the composer & lyrics fraternity up either.

Only if there is some sort of an equality here, can a fraternity be called balanced.

Both socially, and monetarily and hence a royalty must be shared. It's a no brainer on this one. If I make a song, I deserve the royalties of that song too. If I only see a particular party enjoying it, I will speak about it and express myself.

Sadly this may also mean that I may unintentionally write a post that may sound Singer-bashing (in this case) but if one looks deep, it's only an appeal to a system.

I'll end this huge _"Antara"_ by a simple question to cross us through the main topic (yet again)..

_"In your opinion, are Composers/Lyricists revered as much as a singer is, in this country?"_

If your answer is no. Then that's all I am against and so we sort of are on the same page.

If your answer is, They aren't because they don't do good work.

I want to know how those stadiums are filled up to listen to those same songs, when a singer is on stage ??

I've looked to not destroy anybody's image or make a comment about their musical capabilities as I've been taught, not to do so.

So without doing the above, I've tried summing up what I had to say. Saying anything more would just be going on for the heck of it and I don't believe in doing so.

I rest my case right here.I think I've instilled my agenda in my post, and that's all.

I never understand this royalty, copyrights issues :(

But what does this mean

This meant that once a singer had recorded an original song, for the next 50 years, everyone except the producer needed their consent and would have to pay royalty to play or perform their song in public. Be it at a restaurant or gym, on radio and television, streamed through internet, or played by DJs.

A song is the property of the composer and singer. As long as both get royalties I am happy for them.
