Chapter 3 Shades of Separation
"We can not be together anymore. I will not hold you back. I am setting you free... the words echoed in Sameer's head like a broken record. If someone could sell a piece of his heart for a rupee, he would be a millionaire. It had been a week since he heard them, he was still in shock. And the person responsible for his misery was looking worse than he did. A week of silence, a week of acute pain, a week of his soul missing from his life, and yet here he was waiting to see a glimpse of her.
He never thought this would happen again. That a person he loved with all his being could leave him, again. May be he was unfortunate in love. May be he did not deserve it at all, and all this while he was living under an illusion. He was broken after all, just like his family. But something nagged at the back of his head. That whatever that is happening right now is just a tip of the iceberg. But, his heart was not stable enough to think straight.
There she was. How dare she look miserable, how dare she look so lifeless, Sameer thought. After breaking his heart, she had no right to look so sad. She should be happy that she got rid of him, isn't it? Again that voice in the back of his head was whispering something which he ruthlessly brushed aside. As though hearing his voice, she looked at him for a second. All he could see was the longing which mirrored in his eyes. So, why is she making both of them go through this. No matter how much he thought, Sameer could not make sense of this. She was gone as suddenly as she had appeared, making him doubt what he really saw in her eyes.

As he walking aimlessly in the college corridor, Sameer was pushed to the wall all of a sudden and someone was choking him with their forearms.
"What the hell did you do to my sister?" Arjun yelled at Sameer, with all the rage of a protective brother, "Was this another bet?"
"Let go..you dumb ass... " Sameer pushed him out, trying to bring his breath back to normal.
"No, I will kill you today...how dare you are breaking my sister's heart, again! " Arjun screamed.
"What I did to your sister? Why don't you go and ask her? She broke up with me for no reason." Sameer said in a defeated voice.
Arjun, for the first time, really looked at Sameer. He was looking ragged, as though he was not well for a week. Or may be he was miserable for a week, just like his sister. Arjun sighed and pushed his hand through his hair. These two would definitely be the death of him, and all this to deal with when his own love life was a mess.
"Fine. I will listen. What exactly happened?" Arjun asked. Sameer took a deep breath and told him everything.
"Last week, Naina broke up with me. One moment everything was fine, and in the next moment she is behaving crazy. Something about not holding me back, and setting me free! Why would I need to be set free? I am not a bird, for gods sake" Sameer was yelling by the end of his speech.
"Listen, I don't what is going on with my sister. But what I do know is that she loves you madly. She would go against me, and my father for you. There must be some reason why she did what she did. Why don't you two idiots talk, instead of indulging in this angst fest!" Arjun advised.
Some kernel of hope had reached Sameer's heart. That whisper at the back of his head was getting louder and louder which made him think again. Why did she really say "Setting me free?" What that all about? What is really going on in her head? Sameer had no answers, but was determined to get them. He was not letting his behenji get away so easily. No, she was his and that was it!
With that hope, also came back his attitude.
"You are one to talk about angst fest! Dude, when are you going to talk to Shefali?" Sameer smirked at Arjun.
"What do you mean?" Sameer had never seen Arjun so flustered before.
"Well, I did not believe it at first, Naina said that you are in looove with her. Now I can see where she is coming from."
"Whatever!! Arjun stormed away without a glance.
-*-
Naina was being pulled into an empty classroom, again. And she was reminded of all the times Sameer had done this to her before. But she knew that today there will not be any loving caress, there won't any kiss which would set her on fire, there will not any breath stealing hug. Even when she was being pushed against a wall, and Sameer caging her, leaning into her, with rage in his eyes, with hurt in eyes, she could not help but shiver with need.
Sameer's eagle eyes noticed everything. He new the effect he had on her. But, this was not the time to indulge in his fantasies. It was time to get some answers.
"Why?" Sameer asked with all the pain, frustrations he was feeling all this while.
"It is better if we are not together...please understand." Naina pleaded.
"No. I don't. Make me understand. " Sameer insisted.
"I can't. Please, just don't ask questions again. And stay away from me..." Naina pushed Sameer aside and ran from there.
Angry with everything Sameer hit the wall hard, hoping the physical pain would make his emotional one better.
-*-
After his fruitless talk with Naina two days back, Sameer understood one thing. She did not want to be away from him any more than he did. The way she reacted to his presence, the way she swayed towards his body like a magnet, the way she hungered for him, it was all as clear as a day. No. This was not about break up. Something else was going on in her head. He would find his answers, no matter what. And then he would punish her for making him so miserable, a punishment they both no doubt would enjoy.
With a strategy in mind, he went looking for Shefali. Naina would not know what hit her.
-*-
"Sameer, your hair is so cute..." Diya squeeled, as he sat next to her in the canteen.
"Thanks Diya. You look cute too." Sameer replied with a flirtasious smile.
"Sameer, can you please help me with my homework today? I do not understand this chemistry at all..." Priya trailed her finger on his arms.
"Of course. Whatever you ask. I am always ready to help out a beautiful girl." Sameer smiled at her.
It has been over a week since their last encounter, and every day since then was torture for Naina. She had to see her Sameer flirting with those beautiful girls. Not that she did not know what he was doing. She very knew that this was his way of getting back at her. He was not interested in them. What he was doing was really punishing her, he was angry and acting it out. And did she not want him to move on and find a girl who is in every way equal to him? And Priya or Diya were exactly like the girls who would suit him. But knowing all that did not lessen the sting of jealousy. Everything was mess.
Naina stormed out of the canteen and went inside the college library, her solace. She chose a corner hidden from most of the library, and set out to read her English assignment in vain. She was there for about half an hour, when she heard some giggling. Not again, she thought.
"How nice of you to help me, Sameer." Priya gushed, batting her eyelashes.
"Of course. But, let me first get the books." Sameer came towards the isle of books close to Naina.
Naina could not take it anymore.
"What the hell are you doing?" Naina asked Sameer with her teeth clenched.
"You are talking to me?" Sameer turned from the row of books towards her, pointing a finger at himself.
"Of course yes, as you very well know."
"I am helping Priya, you know, with Chemistry. Don't you think we will be good at it? " Sameer winked.
"I know you are doing anything but helping her study." Naina fisted her hand.
"Really? What else do you think I am doing?" Sameer smirked at her.
"That does not matter. What ever it is you are doing, stop it right now."
Suddenly, he stopped smiling. He pushed her towards the book stand and pulled her hands up, holding them tightly in his hands.
"Are you jealous?" Sameer growled at her.
"No.. I am not." Naina tried to pry her hands from his, but he only tightened his hold on her.
"Yes you are. I know you and I read your eyes. Right now you want to burn Priya to the ground." He breathed in her ear and neck, making her shiver.
"N-n-o..I do not. Leave me." Naina manged to push Sameer and freed herself from his hold.
"You left me, remember. I no longer belong to you and I do not have to listen to you. "
"Fine then. Go ahead and do your chemistry with that Priya. It does not matter to me." Naina fumed.
"Of course I will. And may be I will take her to that Chat House afterwards. You remember the place right? Your favorite? Near L.H. Road?"
"You..you..." Anger was making Naina unable to speak up.
"See you around..." Sameer waved at her and went back to Priya.
