"Jaan didi, come on lets play holi" Mowgli begged, pulling at her hand
Avni came out of her daydream and followed Mowgli outside
Avni watched as the kids threw colours and danced around
Sunheri sat next to Avni, putting a hand on her arm
"Missing Neil" she asked
Avni couldnt help the tears that came to her eyes
Their last holi together didnt seem so long ago, the way he had held her close under the shower, how they had laughed and danced together. Back then she was a woman on a mission, not looking for love but Neil had found a way to capture her heart, she offered Sunheri a small smile as she wiped away Avni's tears
"Ill say it again hm, just consider it, go back to him"
Avni shook her head "No, its better this way"
Sunheri nodded "If thats what you believe"

"DD, im really not interested in playing Holi"
"I know you are missing Bhabhi, but maybe this will cheer you up"
Neil looked over at a man trying to cheer his wife up, everytime he danced with her, she would try to pull away, he couldnt help but recall how Avni had been with him then, she had tried to walk away to, but he hadnt let her
Maybe it was a sign, that she belonged in his life, it was true he would do anything to keep her in his life, but this time he had failed her
"DD please, I want to leave" Neil begged
DD huffed "Just stay for a while please"
Neil nodded and went to sit down, he pinched the brim of his nose and closed his eyes
"I wonder what you would say to me today Avni, happy holi wifey" he whispered, throwing the platter of red powder up in the air
Avni looked up at the red powder above her head, she lifted her hand slowly and touched her hair and forehead then looked down at her fingers
Her breathing was shaky, it was like wearing sindoor again, she closed her eyes basking in the small moment she could feel like Neil's Avni again.
Sunheri looked over at her and smiled "Its the festival of Holi, dress like you did before, just for today"
Avni couldnt think of a legitmate reason why she shouldnt dress as she did before, if only for one day, she could relive something beautiful

Avni looked down at her long white dress and the piercing in her nose, she pulled her hair down from the band and smiled
Now she felt like before, she had forgot the strength she felt when she was Neil's Avni, it felt like there was nothing she couldn't deal with, nothing she couldnt surpass
She stepped outside and grabbed a platter of powder and threw it up in the air "Happy Holi" she shouted
Neil turned on his heel quickly, he knew that voice, he looked around quickly trying to find the owner of the voice when he felt his trouser leg being tugged
"Hello" he muttered, lifting Mowgli up
"Hi, will you play Holi with me"
Neil nodded "Pick a colour"
Mowgli tapped his chin "green"
Neil picked up some in his hand and Mowgli jumped down and did the same
Mowgli ran forward towards another young boy and threw the colour at him
"Hey wait" Neil shouted as Mowgli ran away from him
Avni looked around, unable to see past the colours being thrown in the air, she stepped back and turned around
Neil lost his footing , trying to stable himself he cut his hand on the nail on the table
Looking at his hand, he shook it and hissed in pain
Avni stepped back again, knocking into him she tripped over his foot and he grabbed her waist as she fell
Neil looked down at Avni, he lifted his hand, pushing her hair out of the way
"You came" he muttered in disbelief
"I knew you would" he lifted his cut hand, pushing the blood on his hand through her hair
"You always come to me when I am hurt or in danger, now you look like my wife" he smiled
Avni couldnt move, couldnt breathe, how could Neil even be here?
Neil pulled her up straight and cupped her cheeks
"My Avni, speak to me, I need to hear your voice" he pleaded
Avni remained quite
"Please, its already so hard without you, dont torture me like this, just say my name please"
Neil grabbed her shoulders, shaking her but Avni still couldn't make sense of any of it
She looked around, taking her chance to get away she pulled away and ran through the crowd
"Avni" he shouted, his fist clenched in the air
Sunheri's jaw dropped at what she had just saw, there had to be something she could do
She looked down at the alcoholic drink on the table and smiled
"Here, have this, it will help" she suggested
Avni took it without thinking and downed the drink
Neil looked around, "Why do you come and then leave me Avni"
Neil sat down on the chair and wiped his eyes
"What kind of cruel game is this, always so close and then so far away"
He banged his hand down on the cut glass and let out a sob
He looked up when he saw Avni again
She danced around, twirling and throwing the colours in the air
" You came back" he looked down at his hand and smiled, standing up he walked to her
Neil grabbed her elbow, stopping her from dancing he looked into her eyes
Avni spun around him and he smiled, closing his eyes in comfort at just having her so close
Avni caught a glance at his hand and sighed, she picked his hand up and shook her head
Then tapped her cheek and smiled
Neil's eyes widened and he lowered his head, kissing her cheek
She laughed loudly and then kissed his cheek
She closed his eyes and he gripped her waist, his breath stuck in his throat, he rubbed his cheek against hers and smiled
Avni wiped some powder on his cheek
"Happy Holi Neil"
Neil smiled and kissed her forehead
Avni stepped back, turned and ran away, this time he wouldnt chase her, he would let her go
Because with this moment, he would live the rest of his life
He lifted his fingers, touching his cheek where her lips had previously been
Although a dream, he would keep the memory close to his heart, his Avni would always be with him
It was the small moments that made a lifetime and on this day, he would always remember it as the day his Avni returned to him, if only for a shortwhile
Avni looked over at Neil and then down at her hand, her eyes filling with tears
She blew him a kiss and closed her eyes, praying "Take care of my Neil please, heal his heart for me, hes special, please dont let him hurt anymore"
And just like that, two incomplete people became complete again, if only for a moment, it would last a lifetime
Forever was what you made of it and on this auspicious day of Holi, Neil and Avni had their forever
