First about Munj, well Munj is considered one of the most learned and intelligent Kings of India. Munj was not a defensive and peace loving king like shown in the show. He did became offensive when Tailap's ambitious nature started raiding southern region of malwa which is actually mahishmati of Avanti. Malwa's name was Avanti in ancient time. Well, Munj defeated Tailap many times and got initial success but failed to subdue him. When Tailap escaped from a war Munj decided to pursue him against advice of his minister Rudraditya and therefore got captured by Tailap and later he was executed. Info about his welfare works is available on Wikipedia so not gonna mention it here.
Now coming to Mrinal , her character is first mentioned in Prabandha chintamani by Merutanga. He writes while in captivity Munj and Mrinal fell for each other and maintained a secret relationship. When Munj declared his plan to escape Merutanga writes she came out not worthy of trust and revealed his plans to Tailap. Munj was badly executed and his severed head was placed in front of the doors of the kingdom.
