First of all the context of a historical depends on how you see it.Its not mandatory that every historical figure's life will be a sad story dedicated towards some purpose. This show deals with a phase in Prithvi Vallabh's life which is what changed his life forever.Mrinal is an integral part of his life and she can never ever be overlooked. The love story with Mrinal is the what forms the crux of Prithvi's story.
Then where is it written that Prithvi Vallabh's story is about betrayal? And where does honour killing fit over here? Mr Anirudh Pathak has mentioned umpteen number of times that this show is neither based on KM Munshi's novel nor on the old movie. Its 80% mystery and 20% history.Infact there are really few sources about Prithvi Vallabh's history.Even Munshi's novel is not entirely accurate.
This show is the star crossed love story between two individuals who are polar opposites and how they affect each other's lives.
Prithvi is certainly not 'obsessed' with Mrinal. He was looking for someone all his life and he felt connected to Mrinal. And at a point he will fall passionately in love with her coz that's what the story is about.
And Mrinal is selfish and opportunistic? She is a human being. She was clear about her goal from Day 1 and will do anything to achieve that. She is someone with a scarred past.As a child she saw her entire family getting murdered in front of eyes.So it's natural for her to turn cold and bitter. At the same time her loving side appears in front of those she cares about.
She is extremely practical and pragmatic.Prithvi needs her as much as she needs him.
And even if she is ruthless to her enemies it's not a big deal. All great kings in history possessed ruthlessness. So why can't a princess be the same? She is not cruel mind you.Neither is she a totally mahaan character. She is what I call a beautifully flawed grey shaded character.
Also I guess many people are enjoying this love story as it's different from what's usually shown on TV.The execution and characterizations are superb and the leads are impeccable actors with a superb chemistry.

^^ I don't know much abt this part of history.
But from whatever I have heard about K M Munshi's book she was arrogant in the beginning but later she was head over heels with Prithvi. Infact she didn't want him to escape because she thought after escaping he might not love her like then as he would get busy with his Kingdom and wife. She loved the moments they were spending in prison therefore wanted him to remain in Manyakhet as a prisoner forever, in that way she'll have him foreverThat's the reason she told Tailap about the escape plan. Mrinal had never even thought in her wildest dreams that Tailap will get PV killed. She remained guilt ridden throughout her life.According to the movie she gave up her life along with Prithvi. So at least in the novel n the movie she wasn't that cruel as selfish. She was a human character, had her own flaws yet was lovable. In the show her character has been improved even more. She has been given a strong reason to hate PV n Malwa.

Ashi you have put most of the things I wanted to put. Just wanted to add couple of things. Humans whether it is man or woman has flaws, women also feel the anger, they also have ego and that doesnt mean they are bad. Just like these qualities doesnt make a man bad. Again men also has softer emotions, they also are nurturers. The story is exploring a contrast where the expected masculine traits are in a female and the expected feminine traits are in a man.
If the roles are reversed the glory will be sung of the woman who tolerated the man, transformed him, sacrificed for him. But here when reverse happens a woman is crucified. It's time we get such stories because more than history a woman like Mrinal is a reality of the present world. Women with scarred past at various levels.
