Essential items, basic necessities for survival and vital health related products shouldn't be taxed in developing countries. There is nothing luxurious about menstrual hygiene products, so why is govt taxing them as if there is. They should be exempted from GST. It's fair for the govt to subsidise essentials needed for sustenance like food, medicine, health, well-being, education. Where the entertainment industry fits into this to warrant a subsidy?
Entertainment tax accounts b/w 20-50% of the ticket costs depending on the states. Waiving of the tax wouldn't necessarily result in lower ticket prices. It's not obligatory for the theatre owners to pass it on to viewers. But exhibitors and distributors will benefit immensely with higher profitability, producers with high revenue, actors with greater visibility. But the govt stands to forgo a whopping amount in view of the tax exemption. Why should they...in the interest of black money holders? Isn't it unjust on the part of govt to subsidise an industry which is notorious for corruption, money-laundering and tax swindle. Let them work on good scripts, make fine-quality products and then turn it into profitable ventures. Only that is going to help the industry in the larger scheme of things.
