The Shri Rajput Karni Sena's Rajasthan president Mahipal Singh Makrana on Saturday said the outfit wants nothing less than a ban on Padmavati, when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has agreed to release Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film with certain changes.

"We don't understand why the government is making it a prestige issue by insisting that the movie be released one way or another. The CBFC constituted a panel of experts but did not give them any power. The three members who watched the movie Mewar royal family member Arvind Singh, historian Dr Chandramani Singh and Prof K K Singh of Jaipur University have opposed the movie, he said.

"Arvindji pointed out over two dozen mistakes in the movie, Dr Singh said history has been contorted in the movie and Prof Singh said the movie has been made solely to make money. So why is the government insisting on releasing it? The developments come after Gujarat polls. They should know elections to four more states are not far away, Makrana said.

Sukhdev Singh, national president of Karni Sena's splinter outfit Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena, said the movie should be banned and threatened to vandalise cinema halls.

"Ask the three committee members if they gave the green signal to the movie's release. This (the release) cannot happen, we will not allow it. Crores of youths will be on the streets to protest the release, he said.

Rajput Sabha chief Giriraj Singh Lotwara said the movie should be banned. "The screening committee members have said the movie has nothing to do with history, then why is the CBFC going ahead with it? What was the purpose of the committee then? We demand that the movie should be banned.

Shri Rajput Karni Sena founder patron Lokendra Singh Kalvi said he "welcomes the move to screen the movie before a "pre-censor board but said that it remains to be seen whether the outfit's concerns have been addressed. "We will see how many cuts are actually there, Kalvi said.

"The movie is expected to be screened before the remaining members on January 6. The government could have constituted this panel earlier and avoided trouble. The panel is what we had earlier asked for, he said.

I mean, out of all the issues we should be raising, is this the most relevant one for the country?

All these threats and violence? ..all this for a movie?
Sentiments my foot!

threats of violence and vandalising halls threats to life are not okay, not done. But SLB called it upon himself. A country which is largely ruled by sentiments, this time sentiment are right but way of expressing is not. If all those rumours, right or wrong of Khilji-Padmavati scenes together were not enough to cause damage; then ghoomar song certainly did. It only added fuel to fire, indicating there might certainly be some playing with history. Especially when for a long time, SLB did not acknowledge film as historical fiction, but history. whether we want to believe it or not, but out of so many people many don';t read books or have time to actually research to right sources too. eventually films & TV become a kind of source of history and mythology. Responsibility of maturity was required on both sides, protesting parties and SLB himself. 'Coz even in this age, a Queen will not dance like a common courtesan. I know of people who till just few years ago in their families did not consider dancing good for girls. Forget a Queen dancing infront of all. Sadly, when it comes to prestige issues, emotions rule everything else, even safety.

From the start its a known fact that its based on the poem "Padmavat'. He has also staged a play in UK, based on the poem, and later he thought of making it into a movie... If idiots who refuse to see that truth and purely make it an ego issue, then its their faults, SLB is not responsible to keep chanting that its based on a fictional poem, not the real history.

"So why is the government insisting on releasing it? The developments come after Gujarat polls. They should know elections to four more states are not far away, Makrana said."

This is their reality... they know its a matter of Votes and politics and hence threatening the government with the upcoming elections

From the start it was clear that the film was based on " PADMAVAT" which is a fictional poem by Jayasi. NO one claimed it as HISTORY..

Also there are no accounts to prove that Padmini even existed for real. Even the inscriptions about the war also have different accounts.

Also about the Ghoomar song, It is a medium of expression of the director and he did have a team behind it, he had consulted an expert who has even taught the queen. But yet people raise objections from what I have seen I did not see anything objectionable in it nor is the rani shown in bad light.

Ratan is the only male watching and the 2 guards are turned to the other.

EMOTIONS are used as an excuse. Shyam Benegal had made a few episodes on this story for Bharat Ek Khoj, It was watched by people. No one had any issue.

Also just cos they are emotional does not mean they can take law into their own hands. Also if they are having an issue .. Let them not watch it. Why force their will on others?

The rumors of scene between Khilji and Padmavati were the cause of trouble for Karni sena first . Despite the team clarifying they continued protests. Govt also supported, most BJP ruled states baned it. Despite public threats no action taken against the perpetrators.

Now that has vanished. After certain section of media watched and clarified that there are no scenes between Khilji and Padmavati, Karni sena came up with issues on Ghoomar and then CBFC saying they are worried about the women's group raising concern over sati!

This itself clearly shows it was all tactic from the part of government to captalize on the issue and get some votes in Gujarat.

@blue : Exactly, They have full rights to protest outside the theatres peacefully, Also not watch, if they have so much issue, but taking the law in their hands, was too much and Government instead of stopping it, supported them just for the elections. Now they are using the same card again, to get a complete ban.
