I have never liked Vidya Balan. But I loved Tumhari Sulu. She was really endearing in it. I'm glad the movie worked. Everybody's performance was so sincere. Cute little film, that one.

I didn't find anything wrong or worthy of scrutiny in what vidhya said. She neither meant any ill-will nor underestimated others capabilities. It's all a matter of perception.

When it comes to box office outcome of a film it ultimately boils down to the merits of the film and how good it connects with people. Being married or single doesn't hold any importance. Having had enough experience in the field she very well knows that; that's why she attributed the success to the good script. Even young single actresses find it hard to deliver hits and she herself has given a string of flops. Isn't she aware of all these?

Moushumi Chatterjee debuted in hindi movies after marriage.Bindu was successful as a Vamp even after marriage. I am sure there are many more example of such.

some one mentioned UP..but the movie was a success..by all means..so was Ki and Ka..i am no fan but kareena has had some solid running post marriage..

Maushami Chatterjee is not known as a Commercial star that can make a movie success on her shoulders...

and for kareena ... she hasn't done even one film that she could carry on her shoulders..there was HEROINE..and everyone what fate it suffered..not only the movie flopped..but she acted v.badly in the film. infact, she is nowhere close to Karishma when it comes to acting.

and by no means possible, no one really knows if she was in BB..harshali malhotra was the heroine..but bollywood is shameful unlike oscars they would credit her performance as a child artist...same goes for Zaira Wasim in SS

Released not too long ago, a commercial success, totally heroine oriented, she carried on her shoulders, no other big stars including male stars...

A middle aged housewife, a mother, taken for granted, made fun of by family members finally finds her voice, forges her own path blah blah blah 😉

Vidya should have added Married actresses "in current Bollywood" can score a hit

In 1970s, 80s, married actresses were ruling the charts and had hit movies. Nobody cared back then that the heroine was married or had kids...film story and script portrayed mature female characters so married actresses could fit into those roles.

Sharmila married Pataudi in 1969, after that she had superhit movies with Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Dharmendra, etc...like Daag, Amar Prem, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Bahu, ...as well as critically acclaimed movies like Mausam, Aavishkar, Namkeen.

Saif was born in 1970 so Sharmila continued to work during and after childbirth and was as successful as she was before marriage and motherhood.

Rakhee married Gulzar in 1973, (she was already married and divorced before that at a young age)

After marriage to Gulzar, Rakhee had dozens of successful movies like Kabhi Kabhie, Muqaddar ka Sikandar, Kasme Vaade, Trishul, Kaala Patthar, Jurmana, Barsaat ki ek Raat, many such superhit movies with Amitabh Bachchan...as well as female centric movies like Tapasya, Baseraa, Chameli Memsaab.

Both Sharmila and Rakhee were top female stars in 1970s AFTER their marriage, they had successful films with top actors as well as critically acclaimed female oriented movies.

Moushumi Chatterjee did most of her films after she married Hemanta Kumar's son at a young age.

Jaya continued to act after marriage and had several commercial and critical hits

She was pregnant while shooting for Sholay.

In those days, top actors happily acted opposite these married actresses, and audience happily accepted that those heroines were married and had kids.

Even Kajol has had successful movies after marriage and kids, didnt she?

K3G, Fanaa, MNIK, all were after marriage and kids.

I think the trouble started after the 2010s when married heroines took a backseat, top actors paired up with newcomers and younger heroines.

Current Bollywood and also its audience have become much more sexist and demand fresh young heroines who can strip and do item songs, hence mature, married heroines dont get roles in mainstream movies and they opt for female oriented movies which dont always do well commercially.

Hence Vidya's statement pertains to current Bollywood, not to previous decades, when married actresses were loved and accepted by industry and audiences alike.
