The real reason for why channels or shows that have interesting content, but gain low ratings in contrast to channels and shows with regressive content is actually the dodgy trp rating system the indian tv industry refuses to get rid of for some unknown reason. The reason why regressive shows get good ratings under this rating system is because trp's, as I have researched into how it is calculated:
"A device is attached to the TV set in a few thousand viewers houses for judging purpose." (Timesofindia)
Yes you read it right. Trp's are based on a few thousand devices attached in people's tv sets (that too, only in india) and so this rating system only includes viewers that have this device in their sets. That means that the current rating system, TRP actually excludes a lot of viewers because international viewers are not take into account, who mostly watch more progressive and interesting content, and most tv sets with this device are found in rural areas in india rather than urban areas, so majority of the viewers under the current rating system are from rural areas who watch regressive and backward content. Viewers from urban areas in india are less under this system, and urban areas there are more educated people, and these are the people in india who are more likely to watch progressive content.
If shows with good content are to do well, it has to start by getting rid of the dodgy trp system that mostly counts views of those few thousand with that special device in the sets, and need to come up with a more accurate way of measuring ratings. How on earth this hasn't happened yet is above me. I have heard there are people who are actually benefiting a lot from using this dodgy trp system because apparently it can be easily manipulated too. A new rating system must include every viewer, including international viewers, and watch it...all these regressive and BS shows would be goners if international viewers were taken into account.
For the longest time now, naamkarann has been UK's number one rated indian show, but just this week after ages it finally was toppled out of the uk's top 5 indian shows, because now that show has also since the past 2 months been treading down the regressive storyline track of pati-patni and woh living under one roof, and lots of scheming. This proves that international viewers hate regressive BS and I wish india opened their eyes to realise the potential if they stopped ignoring their international viewers and urban viewers just for a stupid device only found in a few thousand homes in india.
It's funny, because producers keep blaming the audience for ridiculously regressive content being at the top, when in actual it is the fault of the idiots who have this dodgy rating system in place. How can you blame the viewers when majority of your audience is excluded from ratings and mostly rural audience are counted?
