Easy blending using the gradient tool

One of my favourite tools for blending two pics together is the gradient tool. It is quicker than the eraser tool and is almost as effective, once you get the hang of it. Of course, you need to couple it with eraser, as that is what helps fine tune the blending.

So, let's jump straight into it. So, I am using these two pics for blending [X]

Step 1: Open the pictures you are going to use. For the purpose of this tut, I will be using only 2 pictures. This can also be done using more than 2, but for simplicity, we can start with 2.

Step 2: Open a background in your preferred dimensions. You can use Ctrl+N (Windows) or File>New. The default is a white background.

Step 3: Paste on of the pics onto the background. You can do this in many ways: The easiest is to use Select> All, the Edit>Copy, and Edit>Paste onto the background. Position the picture as you like. Set the blend mode to darken. Darken is used when the background is light/white, and lighten when it is dark/black. This helps in blending faster and easier.

Step 4: Repeat this with the second image.

Step 5: Add layer masks to both the pic layers. Now, pick the gradient tool that is in the toolbox. Choose blending mode to linear burn, and lower the opacity to 20-30%. To remove the excess parts of a picture, anchor the gradient tool to the part you want to keep, and drag to the part you want to remove. Repeat for all pics. (Ensure that the default color palette is set, the results will be reversed otherwise.)

Step 6: Open eraser with a soft brush, around 85% opacity. Erase out the excess areas, and tada! Your blending is done.

Step 7 (OPTIONAL): Go to Layer>Merge Visible. This merges all layers together. Now, duplicate the layer. Change the blending mode of the layer on top to soft light. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Set the radius as 2.1 pixels. (I like this step as it gives a depth to the sig). If you find the edit too dark, lower the opacity of the top layer, according to requirement. Ideally, the opacity would be above 75%, unless the pictures are very dark.

Step 8: Place your texts according to your requirement, and your sig is done!
