Aamir Khan 'Won't Mind' If Zaira Wasim, Other Actresses Are Paid More If This Happens
Aamir Khan says, "Anyone who has the ability to fill seats gets a bigger share in the fee"
Written by Divya Goyal | Updated: October 12, 2017 16:00 IST

Aamir Khan says that the day actor who has the "ability to fill seats" deserves "bigger share in fees" regardless of their gender. Aamir Khan has given Bollywood its top money spinners such as Dangal, PK and 3 Idiots. Aamir, 52, who co-stars with Zaira Wasim in upcoming Secret Superstar, was asked whether he would be okay if his female co-actors got a bigger pay cheque than him. Speaking to news agency PTI, Aamir said: "Anyone who has the ability to fill seats gets a bigger share in the fee. So the day she (Zaira Wasim who debuted in Dangal) will be able to fill more seats then me I won't mind her getting a bigger paycheck than mine."

"And that is not going to be determined by her gender, it is the market that will determine that. As a producer, I will want her if she is benefiting my film, gender doesn't matter. I will give her value, from a purely economical point of view," said Aamir, who also co-produces most of the films he stars in. Aamir Khan also explained that every film has one or two members in the team, who become the point of attraction for the movie-goers. "That is what we describe as stardom. That could be Salim-Javed as writers and Rahman as a music director," he said.

Aamir Khan didn't stop at wage gap disparity between actors and actresses and extended the discourse to a film's creative and technical team. "I don't understand why is a cameraman's or an editor's work less important than an actor's. I strongly feel all the people in the creative team are contributing equally and should be paid equally. Everyone should be valued equally. There are only two people, who can be valued a little higher - the director and the writer," he said.

Aamir Khan told PTI that the only way to bring a change in the showbiz industry's pay design is with a change in society's attitude, which does not see "women as heroes." He said: "We don't see women as heroes. We start planting these thoughts in our heads since childhood. There has to be a paradigm shift in that. I am someone who strongly believes in equality whether you are man or a woman. But ultimately in the economics of cinema anyone who pulls people in will be paid higher. There is no question about it."

Aamir Khan is currently filming thugs Of Hindostan for Yash Raj Films, which also stars Fatima Sana Shaikh, Katrina Kaif and Amitabh Bachchan. The plot of the Vijay Krishna Acharya-directed film, will be from Fatima's character's point of view.

I totally agree with him.
This - He is gladly willing to pay more to his female co-star provided she is able to fill more seats for a film.

New Delhi: Superstar Aamir Khan on Wednesday acknowledged the gender pay gap in Bollywood, saying the difference in the paycheck results from the patriarchal mindset of society, which does not see women as heroes.

The 52-year-old actor, who has been the star of some of the biggest money-spinners in Bollywood, said he "strongly believes" in equality, but the change will happen only if there is a paradigm shift in society's attitude.

"Unfortunately, what has happened is that most of our stars are male. The people who draw crowd are male and it is a result of the patriarchal influence on our society."

The actor said the children are conditioned to look at men as heroes from a young age.

"We don't see women as heroes. We start planting these thoughts in our heads since childhood. There has to be a paradigm shift in that. I am someone who strongly believes in equality whether you are a man or a woman. But ultimately in the economics of cinema, anyone who pulls people in will be paid higher. There is no question about it," Aamir said in an interview here.

The actor, whose last 'Dangal' had strong women characters and his upcoming 'Secret Superstar' also has a teenage girl at the centre, said he would not mind his female co-actors getting a bigger pay cheque.

"Anyone who has the ability to fill seats gets bigger share in the fee. So the day she (Zaira Wasim) will be able to fill more seats than me, I won't mind her getting a bigger paycheck than mine.

Never been a Fan of his acting...but THIS is the sanest anybody has sounded...
To the point..Even SRK has blabbered a diplomatic reply when asked about this!!!
Fair Enough...I never understand why a Khan should get paid equal to a KR, an AS or a DP...See JHMS flopped and all were blaming SRK ...None mentioned AS...

Likewise no point in paying Shahid K or Ranbir K more than DP or AS...COZ they aren't half the stars that the ladies are...

While I agree and understand where he's coming from, how are we going to determine that?
There are some people like me who don't watch a movie because such-and-such actor/actress is starring in it?

As much as I agree with this it still dodges the bigger question which is the content of BW continues to be male-centric . All other conversations of gender equality in salaries etc are moot unless the 90% of the current movies don't consider female characters as an afterthought.

It depends on the market...The distributors pay high price for the name associated with the movie...At one point writer duo Salim-Javed were paid more than the popular actors...It depends on several factors like collections in the opening weekend and the total collections, how their movies fare at the BO irrespective of their gender consistently ...A R Rahman,Hirani command a big payscale...Sridevi and to some extent Madhuri in their prime were paid more than their costars...

This is complete naivety... I remember akshay khanna being paid 2 crores when he was doing rubbish stuff and the highest the top actresses got was around 1 crore...

Can someone pls remember there was this huge controversy when i think bipasa (or was it DP) who demanded equal pay in comparison to their useless less-seat-filling costars...

There are so many instances like this.. People with better memories will be able to quote them

And that is another completely relevant point... We don't write good female characters... Not to mention we throw out actresses as they start reaching 30s (a few exceptions don't count) while male actors continue to act as lead well into their 50s

I could be wrong but I sincerely feel like women have abandoned theaters in recent times. All the mainstream movies for the last decade or so are filled with machismo - men running and jumping around, action, masala, women relegated to item songs and two bit nothing roles and generally not much to satisfy female viewers.

They've gone to TV which is also regressive but in a different way. They are busy watching serials like Naagin.

All the movies being made are basically made with teenage boys in mind as their primary audience. Even on those "First day first show" videos, all you see are sea of men giving their opinions.
