Shivaay prowled the bedroom, refusing to take his gaze off the bathroom door. On the other side, he could hear the shower running, knew Anika was in there, but having her gone from his sight so soon was wreaking havoc with his system. She had disappeared into her rooms right after that sham engagement event, leaving him nursing a bottle of Blue Label, Suffice to say, Shivaay was drunk and pissed, a combination that hardly ever bode well for anyone.
When he thought of how Thappar had been leering at her, his vision sparked with red. It took considerable effort from his brothers to calm him down. After all, they said, this was all his idea and he could put a damn stop to it whenever he wanted.
He spun on a heel toward the fridge and took out the carton of orange juice, pouring it into a glass just as the bathroom door opened behind him. Steam curled out, appearing to carry her out the door in slow motion.
Oh, holy f*ck.
She was so beautiful, her face wiped clean of makeup and pink from the shower. He wanted to go to her, but his legs wouldn't move. Her ample lips spread pressed into a thin line as she walked passed towards the dresser. Shivaay, not for the first time, savoured the right he had to love her, to touch her. Jesus. It almost didn't seem real that he should have such a privilege. But had he earned it?
Christ. Jesus Christ.
He could hear his pulse in his ears, banging like a steel drum. His thoughts were rudely interrupted as Anika finished up and made a move to exit the room.
"What the hell are you doing?
"Are you seriously asking me that? After spending the better part of the week planning my wedding? She was pissed too. Her eyes sparking with fury.
"F*ck this engagement and f*ck the wedding. It was never going to happen.
Anika tried to hold on to her anger, but it slipped through her grasp. She didn't know if she was supposed to be happy that he apparently wasn't planning on throwing any wedding, or if she should try to convince him to walk away completely...She was just so incredibly tired.
"I don't want to see you again. She was done playing a witless doll. All she wanted was a quiet corner to lick her wounds and become whole again.
"Bullshit.
She narrowed her eyes, her voice deliberately cold and thin. "I don't remember this being a request. I want you to leave. Now.
"Make me. He moved forward, closing the distance between them until he towered over her. "There's more at stake than some wounded pride, and you're smart enough to know that if you'd stop reacting and think.
"I can't think with you so close. She struggled to push him but he held her firmly, her blows making no discernible difference. Anika was caught in a bittersweet struggle trying to push him away while pulling in closer. Frustration mounted in her as she tried to get her emotions under control in the face of Shivaay's ice wall. She grabbed the back of his neck and kissed him. It was more a sign of aggression than intimacy, a clash of tongue and teeth, with him meeting her every step of the way. Anika pushed him, all too aware that he let her, and then sank down with him to the carpet.
"More, more, I need more.. Anything to keep from thinking a little while longer. She yanked his shirt off, dragging her nails across his chest.
Shivaay's hands were rough on her, shoving aside the long material of her dressing gown, his mouth never leaving hers. As if he needed this as much as she did and yet he stopped her from descending, his grip hard on her hips.
"Wait. he urged.
Anika met his gaze, knowing in her heart of hearts that it didn't matter, that it was too late, and one more choice had been taken away from her.
"It shouldn't be like this.
She laughed, low and desperate."And how else should it be? Are you going to romance me with sweet words and tell me that you love me? That's not what this is something you've told me from the beginning.
He still didn't budge, so she aimed below the belt.
"Take what I'm offering or I'll find someone else who will.
