Dangal was actually the most niche by most imaginary margins and we all know what it did. Faves ke films flop ho jaaye toh they immediately become misunderstood cult classics on a par with Andaaz Apna Apna. If anything, Bahubali was significantly more "niche" by forum margins. Literally not a Hindi film, no popular stars, mytho-epic etc. JHMS was as mass-oriented as it gets. SRK's strongest genre, pretty locales, "top" heroine, happy film, decent music.

A lot of these were intended to be mass market films. Niche films would be films like Ugly, Lipstick Under My Burkha etc.

Just because a mass market film ends up being too niche in execution does not mean it should be classified as that.
