Late 80s and early 90s were ruled by Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol and Jackey Shroff . (AB Sr had faded, Khans were still kids). In many films, Jacky Shroff used to be second lead. So mainly three stars.
Anil Kapoor's "Ek Do Teen", "My name is Lakhan" and Mr India (Foot Ball) songs were very popular among kids. He was considered next Amitabh. When there were talks like "Can he fit in Amitabh's shoes?" were going on, he famously remarked. "No, because my shoe size is different". That's how Anil was. Someone who always took life/stardom with lightness. (May be that is the secret of his health). Post mid 90s Khans overtook him. But one does not know what was the fees of Anil and Sharukh in Trimurti. One does not believe, Madhuri's pay might have been higher than Salman.
True, these stars are not big as Khans now. But once they were bigger than them.
People say he was arrogant, because he advised Ajay Devgan not to clash with him. But how do we differentiate, whether it was arrogance or concern? Anil, Sridevi were in top of their form then. They were coming under Yash Chopra banner. Here was a kid (not with great looks) debuting in the same day as Lamhe. If Salman advices Adhar Jain not to release his film on the same day when TZH releasing, is it concern or arrogance? (It is another matter. Lamhe shockingly failed and Phool Aur Kante was the surprise hit of the year).
