The War Begins
After three years, he had woken up with a smile.Today he had a reason to be on cloud nine! His love was back and he would make every attempt to be with her through this disastrous time of her life.
Every night, he would get the nightmares of Avni screaming as men ran their hands on her fragile body. Her pleadings to save her would not let him sleep, but for the last week, he had slept dreaming of her beautiful face, dreaming of her.
Three years ago, Avni's grandmother had sold her to a human trafficking racket owner. She was arrested for her heinous crime but Neil had failed to find Avni. Neil had tried his level best to search for his love, but destiny had torn them apart, but even destiny fell weak in front of his love and Neela's prayers.
His team and he had rescued some girls a week ago from a hotel. The girls had covered their faces, but there was one girl, dressed in a s**tty black dress, her hair covering her face, staring in infinity. Neil's heart had skipped a beat when she had tucked her hair strands behind her hair.
"Avni?" He had murmured his eyes wide and heart thudding against his ribcage. She had just looked at him, studied his face for a few seconds and then had wrapped her arms around him. Neil couldn't feel better. He had held her in arms, whispering promises to protect her and assuring her it had ended, but she had not reacted. No tears, no words, just plain silence.
Neil entered the house with a smile on his race. Seeing Neela stare at the plate filled with food sadly, he felt his heart break in pieces. Those b******s had destroyed his girl to shatters. The girl whose smile lit up his world now refused to even look at anyone, but today Neil wouldn't back off.
He knocked the door and entered the room. The once beautifully decorated room seemed to be a victim to Avni's inner turmoil who had destroyed all her pictures that were on the wall and the mirror was broken. It was if Avni had destroyed her own reflection. His heart beat increased as fear engulfed him. He looked around to search for her but found the French window open. Sighing, he walked out to find Avni sitting on the grass that was wet due to last night's shower.
"Avni?" He whispered and placed her hand on his shoulder. She immediately reacted and stood up. She took a few baby steps backward and he face had nothing but fear.
"Paas mat aana!" She screamed as her eyes welled up. Neil looked at her in pain.
Three years back, she would swear that she loved being in arms and now? His mere touch would induce fear in her. He gritted his teeth angrily as he thought of those beasts who destroyed his Avni.
"It's me, your Neil!" He whispered. She looked at him for a few seconds and then her eyes softened.
"I missed you," was all he could tell her. He was not able to meet her, as he was sent to another state by the DCP and had returned the previous day in the midnight.
He had spoken to Neela on the phone every day, who was worried for her daughter as Avni refused to come out of the trauma. She would stay in her room, and wouldn't let anyone touching her, saying that she was "impure. It was as if her tears had dried and words had choked in her throat. She would stare out of the window and touch her wounds, again and again, aggravating them. When she would go to sleep, the nightmares would haunt her and she would wake up, but she just wouldn't cry.
"I was waiting for you to save me Neil, but after some time, I just gave up," Avni replied. Neil hung his head, ashamed to disappoint her.
She walked back in the house and stepped on the mirror piece. Neil had expected her to react, but she didn't. Instead, she pressed the wound and more blood oozed. He looked at her in shock as her face showed relaxed expression.
"Stop it!" He winced and picked her in his arms and helped her lie on the bed.
"Why are you hurting yourself? Don't you get it? It's all over." He shouted seeing the blood rush against her skin. She simply smiled and stood.
She was wearing a blue T-shirt that hung loosely around her body. He looked in her eyes, trying to read her mind, but she pulled her T-shirt sleeves down to reveal her shoulders. Neil immediately looked away. Avni smirked seeing his reaction
"No, you aren't invading my privacy, but after three years I have seen a man look away from my body," she spoke with no emotions in her voice. He looked at her shoulders and neck that was almost blood red because of the tortures she had endured.
"Isse dard kehte hai Neil, to have men lust over your body, to beg them to leave you but go unheard, when you start hating your own body! That's pain Neil, that's pain" She screamed. He watched as she fell to the ground.
He knelt and hugged her. "I promise Avni, it's the end. You won't have to go through all that ever again, main hoon naa," She broke the hug and pushed him.
"I don't need your sympathy, koi dikhaava nahi chahiye mujhe, chale jaao yahaan se!" She replied, anger in her voice.
He fisted his palms angrily. How dare she name his love as sympathy? He held her shoulders and asked her, tears in his eyes, "Teen saal pehle jo pyaar tha, usmein aaj tumhe sympathy dikh rahi hai?" She didn't reply but let tears flow through her eyes. He didn't raise his voice, but Avni sensed pain in his voice.
"I waited for you like crazy. For past three years, Neela Maa was living like a corpse. We searched for you almost everywhere. Aaj jab mili ho, toh khud ko humse door kar rahi ho? Humare emotions ko misunderstand kar rahi ho? Kya lagta hai tumhe? Huh?" He asked her as tears trickled down his cheeks.
"Don't do this Neil, you are hurting me," she tried to get out of his grip.
"No Avni, you are hurting us, and I beg you to stop. Nahi sehen hoga humse. I can't see my love shattered to pieces, Maa can't see you dying every minute. Please!"
Avni hugged him. He picked her in his arms and helped her lie on the bed and held her hand. She looked in his eyes that were red and filled with tears. While he was bandaging her wound, Neela entered with a plate of food. Avni simply nodded. Neela's eyes brimmed with tears of happiness.
Neela fed her daughter. There was complete silence in the room, but the silence was soothing, it was filled with reassurance.
Soon, Avni fell asleep and Neil sent Neela to rest. He caressed her forehead. He knew he had to go a long way to heal her, and he wouldn't stop till he defeats Avni fears. He would fight the pain they had endured.
