Every year, 8 million Americans have a NDE, or a Near Death Experience as it's called. NDE involves patients who have been just to the brink of death and back. And Modern science has recorded so many of these cases, that they ended up having the above acronym for it. The most baffling and mysterious aspect of an NDE, according to psychologists and scientists, is that, regardless of race, religion, background and personality traits, almost everyone who had an NDE, comes back from the coma, and tells the exact same story. The descriptions are eerily similar.
The events leading up to vegetative state are varied. Vital life signs shut down to bare minimum, their loved ones are politely told by the doctors to start "making arrangements and the patients kin give up hope while crying next to the limp body. While the patient's body is stationary and shows all signs of death, something else remarkable is happening to the patient in a coma. He or She is not just aware of all the on-goings around him, but keeps slipping into another realm. They come back to life all of a sudden, after days, weeks or even months, to the astonishment of modern science and doctors. And they all narrate an experience of another dimension of existence that they could not have possibly imagined. Since electrical activity in the brain centers linked with imagination registered is nil, a neurosurgeon might argue, how can a brain dead human being even think, let alone imagine?
Ironically, this is what happened to one American Neurosurgeon, Dr. Eben Alexander.
And he came back from death to write about all the things he saw. In his book, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife, Dr. Alexander recounts how he kept slipping in and out of the hospital room. In between, he would go to dark terrifying places surrounded by "grotesque animal faces and serpents. What surprised him was he was able to smell vomit, feces and rotting flesh, and also hear a low mechanical rhythmic chant in the background. When he started feeling uncomfortable and was seeking a way out of the horrible place, he remembers a golden white light immediately appearing above him. As if reading his thoughts, he was led into a huge archway gate and then into a planet filled with incredible beauty. According to him, there was beauty everywhere. It was just like Earth, except everything was beautiful, and the colours were richer. There were fields of a million butterflies, strange creatures in the sky who roared with delight and joy. He was flying above in the sky above this lush green planet and was able to see the inhabitants of this planet as having simple clothing, but very beautiful. All the while he was flying, he felt as if someone was flying along with him. He turned to see a beautiful blue eyed, blonde woman guiding him lovingly throughout the flight over the planet. Medieval paintings too try to portray the visuals that its painters might have experienced. These paintings were perceived to be merely the imaginations of the painter, influenced by the dominant Christian themes of heaven and hell. But given the millions of cases recorded by modern science of a similar nature, one might have to look at these paintings in a different light. One such painting is below, titled "Ascent of the Blessed, by Hieronymus Bosch. In recent times, many celebrities too have gone public about their experiences. Most notably were Hollywood actresses, Sharon Stone and Elizabeth Taylor's interviews with Oprah. In the interview, they clearly mentions that she had a Near Death Experience, and saw all the typical visions of going through a tunnel and a light at the end. Doctor Alexander says in the book, that he was then led into a huge black portal, whose color he specifies as a bright ink-ish dark. It's like this darkness was not just any other darkness, but was alive. He was telepathically told by the blue eyed woman flying next to him, that this was the Creator. He says, the bluish black vast portal emitted a silent humming sound called "OM.
It corroborates with studies by scientists from NASA, have only in the previous decade, said that what they thought as the dark matter of the universe, is alive and holds more far more information that we humans can see! They also released spectroscopic studies that the color of the universe is not exactly black, but something similar to dark ink blue!
He also writes at the end of the book, that many on Earth, mistake God as being impersonal and formless, which is a huge mistake. God is not formless but is as human as us. And even more human than all of us, he writes. He says that God understands all of our tiniest and mundane anxieties and troubles and is always there for us.
One assuring thing that he was told by his blue eyed flying guide, telepathically was :
"You can do no wrong ever!
In majority of the Near Death experiences, the subject reports that they are assigned guides who are normally previously deceased parents, relatives or friends. So after sufficient reading up on the matter, he admits it was confusing and haunting that his flying blue eyed guide was nobody he knew.
This is where it gets more fascinating. Months later he discovered that he had a sister who was separated at birth named Betsy. Betsy was a social worker and had passed away a few years before. His mother then showed him a photo of Betsy, which he claims was the exact same girl who had been his guide in the after-life.
