The varying degrees of class consciousness

Not sure if it was intentional or unintentional on the part of the writers, but I was struck by some bits today.

Anika has steadfastly claimed that NKK doesn't matter to her one bit, that she isn't one to be class conscious, and yet in the scene with Nayantara today, it was almost striking how Anika was the SSO for once, a class higher than the lower class person she was speaking to😆...and how quickly one forgets in moment like these what they've berated someone else for.

Ofcourse Nayantara is a crass woman that would give any self-respecting person some pause but if I was to play Devil's Advocate here for a bit, she too has as much of a right to call things what she wants and be loud to a degree she finds normal...the role reversal was just striking to me today...Nayantara would call the pool outside the room a TAALAAB and Anika corrected her in this stuffy voice that it's a SWIMMING POOL😆...when Nayantara wondered about the cost of the watch, Anika pointed out in an almost snobby voice that it's worth Rs. 25 lakhs😆...if only someone could play for Anika a sample of the many times she's called something a certain name and Shivaay has corrected her in his high class manner and she's bristled about it😆

I guess the point I'm trying to make is...it is easy to declare that you treat everyone equally, that class doesn't matter to you...but at the end of the day, everyone is class conscious to some extent...it is just the degrees that vary...for a Shivaay, an Anika is beneath his class, outside his world so when he first meets her, he is repulsed by that...and now for Anika, Nayantara is beneath her class and she is in turn repulsed by her. 😆

Not sure if the writers ever intend to make Anika introspect about that and kinda see the basis for where Shivaay's NKK logic is coming from.

Later on in the epi, Anika has another low moment when Pinky taunts her and compares her to Nayantara...for a moment, Anika's self-confidence wavers, a slight moment of identity crisis...she wonders out loud to Shivaay if Nayantara actually turns out to be her mother...if she could ever be related to someone like that...is she a cheap person like that? Again I was struck by how much that thought bothered her...to even remotely be related to someone like that...at the end of the day, even Nayantara is a human being...but we are all guilty of wanting our world to be colored by the kind of people we like and approve of...so then how different is it from Shivaay feeling unsettled about people not having NKK? 😆

Perhaps I'm the only one overthinking this and bringing it back again and again to this point...but I was struck by these parallels today in what I thought would be a generally filler epi...but I found some food for thought :)

The Shivika scene was nice, with Shivaay reassuring her once again...a simple but effective convo :)

Yet to watch. After reading the update i was also thinking Anika also has NKK issue. She could not bear a crass fake mom. But SSO should not be uncomfortable at having a bar dancer MIL.😆

Even a fake mom evoked NKK issues in her. 😆

Unres'd!
I went into the episode today having extremely low expectations...mostly because the spoilers and yesterday's episode all pointed towards a drag fest.

And to be honest, I did skip through some parts of the episode - read PriVeer! But, I was pleasantly surprised with this scene. First, the comfort with which Annika pulled Shivaay's arm towards her to put on the watch herself... any one remember when Shivaay used to insist on her letting him do these things himself? This was a beautiful contrast. Second, I LOVED that Shivaay vocalised 'meri Annika' in front of her... with Annika's track record stuck at 'dosti'...maybe all of these incidents would finally help jolt her out of that one?

But, I hadn't really given your POV so much thought before reading. Maybe in passing it did stick out.. like this instance of NKK does matter at some level to her but your description of this just added so much more here. Maybe at some elemental level Annika empathises with her SSO after all? Maybe even more than she realises ow would be willing to accept. 😊😊

With NKK seemingly centre stage and it's progress, I just have one small wish. I would really love to see Shivaay say "I am not Shivaay Singh Oberoi without you anymore." In full SSO tadi of course, so win - win...he doesn't have to be "out of character" and it's still a allout confession 😆

LOL wohi toh irony hai😆...which is why I wonder if the writers will show her introspecting about what she judges Shivaay for so quickly.

But the scene was nice today...Shivaay's love and possessiveness for her showed when he told her, "Na tum us jaisi ho, na tum uski beti ho...tum sirf meri ho... meri Anika ho...sabse alag, sabse judaa, sabse achhi...kya bolti ho tum?...KHIDKITOD...you're that"😆

Interesting post AY. Food for thought.
It would be nice if the cvs brought about the nkk issue of Anika. But nah...they generally don't think that hard.
Haven't seen the episode do can't comment more.
Wondering, if nayan was a bar dancer...but not crass , generally well behaved, like a grown up ANIKA. But circumstances made her do things...would Anika's reaction be same?
Cause NT is living up to all the issues that shivay had had with certain class of people. She is dishonest, vulgar and a thief.

I am in agreement with your assessment here. It is a true parallel that can be seen here.
I think NT must have had Shivaay change the reports by blackmail. The original reports must have shown a non-match between Annika and NT.

Yep, that would be the expected storyline, no? That Nayan is bad, not very bad? Like the great Mahi? 😆...Crass but with a heart of gold? 😆...I guess when someone is a bechara majboor type figure, anyone would sympathize with them...Mahi pura din rota rehta hai about being najayaz and not getting any lowe, so Anika ko bada pyar aa raha hai uspe😆...while Nayan right now seems to be a crass and petty thief without a sob story so Anika is snotty with her😆

Yes, NT is the stereotype of all that Shivaay and the Oberois seem to generally think about people from a lower/middle class background...the irony is that Anika is the one more repulsed by NT than them right now😆

But given this bald or cancer twist with NT, who knows, usko bhi sob story de denge and then Anika will feel bad about not wanting to be related to her😆

Haven't watched the episode! This is a nice post.. comment Karne ka Mann kar Gaya..

But this is normal..isn't it? isn't this something we have been saying time and again.. (just to be clear no .. no-one is defending SSO and his NKK but)...we all have our pre-conceived notions...our individual wiring.. and that is why SSO's NKK always make sense as a character trait without a sob back story..😆
What we all may or may not have is an Anika who calls our B.S 😆 who would make us want to improve... fine tune our philosophies... our wiring!
I wonder who will make Anika realize how she is reacting subconsciously - what her prejudices are!

If this is deliberate, then clever bit of writing... sounds like an interesting filler episode! 😊

Yes, it deffo looks like blackmail...cuz at first in the precap, Shivaay looked very happy and confident about the DNA results but when he came back home, he looked sad as he told Anika that the DNA results matched for her and NT.

Or I dunno if this is supposed to be an extension of Shivaay-Anika faking stuff to expose NT...just like they did during the fake memory loss track to expose Tia😆

I might disagree with you just a little here. I totally agree with general class distinction people make. However today i didn't feel that anika was judging her according to class but actually by her actions. After the chammiya dance last week, when anika confronted her, she had that to shivaay that why should she respect chammiya if she isn't doing anything that's worth the respect. Naintara has so far misbehaved with shakti, keeps touching shivaay (which btw irks anika so much i love it!😆), inappropriately danced in front of her in-laws, stole shivaay's watch, and most of all anika firmly believes naintara's lying about being her mother to get money from the oberois. So i don't think its the class difference that made anika act the way she did but it was actually naintara's actions since she's come into the picture.
