Exclusive: China's biggest cinema Wanda 'boycotts' Dangal, angering fans
Ananth Krishnan | Posted by Dianne Nongrum
Beijing, May 5, 2017 | UPDATED 13:09 IST

Aamir Khan-starring Dangal is releasing in a record 9,000 screens in China today, but the actor's legions of Chinese fans have, however, been left upset by the curious decision of China's biggest cinema operator, Wanda cinemas, to not show the film in most of its theatres.

"Is Dangal suffering a boycott by Wanda?" asked Fei Xiaochou, a cinema writer, in an article posted today on his social media account on the day of its release in China.

Wanda is China's biggest operator. According to its website, it has more than 1,657 screens across the country, but that number this year will touch around 3,000 screens, industry experts say. In 2015, Wanda, which leads in IMAX screens as well, accounted for around one-sixth of the total box office with close to $950 million.

The article said only 37 screening arrangements by Wanda had been made for Dangal - a little more than just 1 per cent of its screens.

In Beijing, Dangal will be given only three shows in all of Wanda's theatres on its opening day, and none tomorrow.

Many comments on Wanda Cinema's websites have been posted by Chinese film fans asking why there were hardly any screenings of Dangal.

Chinese cinema-goers were left speculating the curious decision, some wondering whether it showed a bias against Indian films by Wanda or whether it was because of a "rivalry" with Huayi, a company involved in marketing.

This left fans especially in smaller towns disappointed, where unlike in Beijing or Shanghai they might not have alternatives.

"There are no screenings in Taian [Shandong] because of Wanda. How can Wanda develop with such a small mindset?" asked a post on Weibo, China's Twitter-like website that has more than half a billion users.

Added user Jing Fen Xiao Ao Jiao, "I am so confused why Dangal is not being shown in every cinema and why there are so few schedules. What matters is that cinemas in my city does not show this film, neither does Wanda. Aamir Khan's films are very good and very meaningful, why do cinemas not show them?"

Wanda is now the world's biggest cinema operator, following its 2012 acquisition of AMC in America. It also owns cinemas in Australia and New Zealand. The parent group, Dalian Wanda Group, is also eyeing major projects in India and is developing an industrial park in Haryana. The group is also thought to be interested in acquisitions in the theatre space in India.

Dangal will still receive a wide release in China in more than 9,000 screens. Aamir Khan spent a week last month in Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu, interacting with thousands of fans, top Chinese stars and even feeding pandas in Sichuan province. Aamir's film PK created a record in China, becoming the first Indian film to gross more than Rs 100 crore in any overseas market, and was shown in over 4,000 screens.

China Box Office

  • BY JONATHAN PAPISH
  • MAY 2, 2017
  • The latest installment in Universal's lucrative franchise led a surprising counterattack against four domestic films, and box office revenue from the three-day Labor Day holiday soared to RMB 728 million ($105 million), a 10% increase from last year.

Fate of the Furious became the highest-grossing imported film in Chinese box office history, eclipsing its predecessor's record in local currency on Tuesday.

The eighth installment in China's most popular foreign franchise has now racked up RMB 2.434 billion ($353.0 million) not including online ticketing fees and will pass Monster Hunt (RMB 2.44 billion) on Wednesday to become the second highest-grossing film of all-time behind The Mermaid (RMB 3.392 billion).

Four domestic wide releases had been widely expected to win the Labor Day holiday box office, yet despite each receiving rave reviews from Chinese moviegoers, none could thwart Furious 8's dash into the record books.

Taking second place slightly behind Furious 8's RMB 178 million ($25.8 million), Shock Wave ("), a Hong Kong-style crime thriller starring Andy Lau and distributed by Bona Film Group, scored RMB 174 million ($25.2 million) in holiday ticket sales.

Wanda's science fiction thriller Battle of Memories () followed with RMB 143 million ($20.7 million), and two romantic comedies This is Not What I Expected (-) and Love Off The Cuff (') rounded out the top five with RMB 82 million ($11.9 million) and RMB 75 million ($10.9 million) respectively.

Pre-release buzz for Friday's new releases are quite strong with Aamir Khan's Dangal likely to become the highest-grossing Indian release of all-time in China and Disney/Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 set to outgross Volume 1. Stay tuned to Thursday's On Screen China for a full box office preview.

On Screen China: Guardians Vol. 2' Primed to Kick Off Another Month of Hollywood Dominance

Following two months of box office dominance in which imported films captured 82% of all ticket sales, the good times will continue to roll for Hollywood in May starting with this weekend's day-and-date release of Disney/Marvel'sGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ("2)

China Distribution - China Film Group Corporation (")
US Distribution - Walt Disney Studios

Box office expectations in China for 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy were somewhat muted when the unknown team of superhero misfits graced Chinese screens in a typically slow post-National Day slot three months after their North American premiere. However, the freewheeling "galaxy protection squad" as they're known in Mandarin, quickly charmed Chinese moviegoers with its offbeat humor and grossed an impressive RMB 596 million ($96.5 million). The film also catapulted leading man Chris Pratt " now widely known simply as (Star-Lord), his character's namesake in the film " into the ranks of China's most-recognizable Hollywood stars.

The sequel is set to piggy-back off its predecessor's runaway success, and thanks to the addition of Baby Groot this time, will likely attract a younger female demographic separate from the usual Marvel fanboys.

As should be expected, presales have been somewhat lackluster compared to other heavyweight Marvel titles likeCaptain America and Avengers, but we anticipate word of mouth to catch fire early in the weekend, pushing Volume 2's three-day opening to RMB 400 - 450 million ($60 - $65 million).

By the end of its Chinese run, this latest mixtape in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will easily outplay Volume 1, falling just shy of RMB 1 billion ($145 million).

Ask any Chinese moviegoer to name a single Bollywood star and you'd probably get a blank stare back. But for those in the know, Aamir Khan would likely be the standout.

Khan's Three Idiots screened all the way back in 2011, and while it grossed just RMB 14 million ($2.2 million), the film'sportrayal of India's high-pressure education system struck a chord with Chinese filmgoers across the country leading to a #12 ranking on Douban's Top 250 list where it sits amongst such Chinese favorites as Wall-E, Hachi: A Dog's Tale andInception.

Khan's religious satire PK similarly played to Chinese sensibilities to become the highest-grossing Indian film of all-time in the territory with RMB 119 million ($19.4 million) back in 2015.

This time around, Khan made a well-publicized appearance (at least in the Indian press, where every Bollywood foray into China is trumpeted with exaggerated fanfare) to promote Dangal as part of last month's Beijing International Film Festival. As a result, Chinese exhibitors appear to have confidence in the wrestling drama's box office potential, andDangal will open on Friday with 13% of the day's total showtimes, the widest release ever for an Indian production in the territory.

We believe Dangal will continue Aamir Khan's hot streak in China. Look for an RMB 70 million ($10 million) debut this weekend and a final haul of RMB 200 million (~$30 million).

At On Screen China, weekly box office analysis primarily concerns the weekend's widest releases, films with the biggest breakout potential, and other newsworthy titles. But each weekend, smaller films, frequently referred to as "cannon fodder" in the Chinese media (paohui or ), squeeze into theaters, rarely selling more than a few hundred thousand dollars' worth of tickets before disappearing into obscurity. The following table details these lesser releases in order to provide a sense of the huge scope of the world's second largest film industry.
