Part 12
"Is it wrong to trust in a beautiful lie, if it helps you get through life??"
Maan got a call from his office, he took it. "Maan, where are you the clients are waiting", Yash said from the other side. "Geet is unwell, I can't come today", He answered still checking on Geet's temperature.

"He is here so please come today", Yash told. "Who...", Maan asked. "My Dad, he is asking for you", Yash said. "Uncle ... but why is he here", He asked. "You know it Maan, well just come here, alright", Yash said. "Wait then, let me make some arrangement for her, she is unwell", He said disconnecting the call. He called only one person he could trust to take care of Geet, so he called him. Dev was studying when he got the call from an unknown number, he took it and was shocked to hear Maan's worried voice on the other end. "Maan bhai, what happened, why are you so worried", He asked. "Dev, please could you come to our house, Geet is unwell and I have to leave for some work for sometime , could you please look after her in that time", Maan said. "Alright, I will be right there", Dev said.
He informed his parents that he will be out for sometime and went to Geet. He entered only to see Maan sitting beside Geet in the living room holding her hand caressing her head. Looking at Dev, he smiled and then whispered once he was close enough, "Thank you Dev, you are the only person, I could trust, please take care of her while I am gone. Here hold her hand". They exchanged hands without disturbing her sleep, caressing her head for one last time, Maan went ahead to take care of the matter while Dev waited patiently beside her. He bend down to kiss her forehead, but the response he earned was a shocking one for him when she called out not his but Maan's name in her sleep. Dev was shocked but he decided to get something for her as now her temperature had gone down, so may be she will get hungry when she wakes up. He did not know how to cook, so he ordered something for her.
As he expected she woke up after a little while but was surprised to see Dev, she smiled at him and looked around for Maan . Dev got her notion and said, "Maan bhai had some work , so he asked me to come". She smiled, "Thank you and sorry for the trouble". He hugged her and then he said something which shocked her a little. "Hey Geet, can I ask you something, a very strange question", Dev said . Geet nodded still in his hug. "Are you and Maan bhai really siblings", He asked. Geet pulled back and gave a hearty laugh hearing that, "Haha, of course we are".
"I..I'm sorry, its just that I'm the only kid so I was just curious about a sibling relationship", He said not wanting her to feel uneasy. Geet smiled, "Dev, could you please bring me that frame kept there". Dev nodded and got the frame for her. She pointed at the people in the picture and Dev got that these must be their parents as both of them are carbon copies of their parents. "You know, here this is our dad, Maan looks exactly like him. I don't remember much as I was only three back then, but he did loved us a lot. Mom left the other pic with me and this is what reunited me and Maan. We are siblings", Geet smiled. "I'm sorry Geet if I offended you," Dev apologized, but Geet nodded in negative. "I know we don't resemble each other like other siblings do, but we have been reunited after many years. If he didn't come for me that adoptive brother...", Geet's voice cracked when she recalled her unhappy days. Dev wiped her tears, "Please Geet don't cry. I did not want to invoke your unhappy memories. Don't worry now everything will be surely alright". They hugged each other and Dev asked her to rest after giving her the light diet he ordered for her.
On the other hand, Maan reached his office to find his mentor there, Yash's dad. "Uncle, why are you here", Maan asked. "I have come to take you back Maan", Mr Malhotra said. "But uncle, how can I leave Geet behind, she is the only family I have. I won't go back", Maan said. "I heard from Sameera, but now this has to end, and you are coming back and that is final", Mr Malhotra was adamant. "But dad,...", Yash tried to interrupt but Mr Malhotra did not give him a chance. "Listen Maan, if you will be this adamant then, you leave with no choice, I have a proposition and if you fulfill it then only I will allow to live here", Mr Malhotra said strictly. He did not want to lose this child just like he lost his friend and that made him be strict with Maan, he loved him more than his own children. "I will do anything", Maan said. He could see a glimpse of his deceased friend there. "Then fine you will work on an international project which should be completed in two months", He told. "And you will start on it from tomorrow got it", He looked at Maan who nodded. "Reconsider your decision Maan, your sibling time will be gone if you take up this, but I have thought something for that too",He smirked. "I never back out uncle, I will do whatever I can", Maan said confidently. Mr Malhotra left, and Maan got back to his house to check on Geet.
As he entered he was happy to see her laughing with Dev, she looked up to him and pouted, "You never keep your promises". "Did you eat something", Maan smiled ruffling her hair lovingly.
"Yes Dev bought me stuff", She told. "Thank you Dev, I'm really happy you are always there, I can't rely on anyone else for taking care of her", He smiled at Dev. "No problem Maan bhai, I think I should leave now, Geet we will meet in the library tomorrow for our studies okay", Dev said. "Yup sure", She smiled.
He left and Maan sat down thinking how to tell Geet about the new project but still he stated, "Geet, I have been assigned a new project and we are starting from tomorrow onwards, I'm sorry but I will be late or might not even come home as the deadline is two months, so please lock all the doors and windows, if you want you can call Dev here or any other friends you have". Geet looked at him for a minute before replying, "Don't worry, I can take care of myself, you just concentrate on your work". "Alright then, I will cook something good for you, so what do want to have tonight", Maan smiled. "I want a Pizza", She said. "Geet but you have just recovered, have something lighter", He tried but was cut by Geet who pouted, "No , I want that only or I won't eat anything"."Alright, I will bake your favorite then, and now rest here and no more jumping around okay", He warned.

"Alright", She grinned. Maan prepared the diner and both had it happily unknown to the storm brewing which will end this happy illusion in a matter of minutes.
The Next day after Maan left to work, Geet was left alone in the house, she heard the doorbell ring and opened it to find Sameera standing with an older man. "Hello, you must be Geet, I'm Sameera and Yash's father", The man introduced himself. "Hello,"She said. "You look a lot like Madhu", He said. "You know my mom", She asked. "Of course I did", He said. "Please come in, Maan just left for work and...", before she could complete the old man interrupted, "I'm only here to tell you that Maan will be going back with us". Geet stopped in her tracks hearing that. "Your sibling life won't last long". Saying this he was about to leave when Geet said, "He won't leave me, he has promised me". The older man looked at her and recalled the same words her mother said years back. he got back in his car with his daughter. "I guess you couldn't do much either", He said to his daughter. "But shes a nice kid...daddy...", Sameera said. "Listen Sameera, I want Maan back to us at any cost even if you have to break them, I won't lose him like I lost his father and my only best friend". Sameera nodded, "Okay daddy".
Geet went out with Dev for their joint studying session. They were returning when she again got a call from Maan. "Geet, lock all the doors and windows tonight, I won't be home okay, are you at home right now", He asked. "Umm.. I was returning...", She said. "Are you out of your mind its night and where are you roaming about young lady", Maan yelled. "I am with Dev, he was going to drop me", Geet said annoyed. "Oh , is that it then its fine," Maan sighed. "Maan you won't leave ...", She said. "I'm just a call away, if you have anything call me okay". Geet was happy with the assurance. Geet was about to enter her house when she found the door unlocked both were shocked thinking it might be a thief or something. "Welcome back Geet", Sameera yelled as soon as she entered.
"What are you doing here", Geet asked. "Is this the way to greet your brother's future wife", Sameera said. "Listen, please get out as my brother does not like you and he said not to let anyone in, so leave and you do not have any relation with him right now so you just can't barge in someone's house imposing yourself, we have had enough of your games", Geet spoke rudely. This rubbed her the wrong way and she remembered her father's words, "Break them.."."Hmm..really Geet, then what sort of relation you share with him", Sameera smirked, leaving Geet and Dev shocked with her question. "What do you mean", She asked. "I mean what you understood Geet, why are you living with him with what right are you even here", She said again. "Listen, I think you have forgotten but this is my bro...", Geet said but was cut by Sameera. "Brother huh, really Geet who said that you share any sort of relation with Maan, you were always alone Geet. And brother really, oh you mean this picture", She said picking up the photo frame and dropping it shattering it into pieces. "How could you do that..",Geet cried looking at the shattered frame.
"Well this is nothing , you both are nothing but two strangers who lived together for sometime", Sameera said. "I said shut up , just because my brother doesn't like you, you say all this to create a rift between us", Geet yelled. "This is the truth Geet, your parents were never married, they died before that so with what right are you in this house", Sameera said. "Get out", She said pushing out Sameera along with Dev outside. She recalled her childhood when she used to ask her granny,"My Brother will come for me right granny". Her granny never answered but only gave her a ghost of a smile, now she understood everything.

"So that's why you never assured me...you never told me that I was always alone",She smiled sadly. She understood what Sameera told was in fact the truth and everything she thought was a lie. "Then why am I still here shouldn't I be running from here," She said to herself. Dev waited outside and yelled on Sameera, "How low could you stoop, Maan bhai never loved you so you targeted Geet, but if anything happens to her remember I will kill you". "I only told her the truth her delusions would have never stopped so well", She said. "Just get the hell out of here", He said. "Jeez, pushing me won't change the truth, you should be on my side too, what if she loves him rather than you", She smirked. "You know that is the difference between your love and mine, even if she did at any point, I would back away, but will never make her suffer, you are disgusting", Dev said holding her arm and pushing her out. He looked up to the window of her room, "I'm waiting here Geet, you are not alone we are here always".
