You may laugh now but many years down the lane she will be known for her dance numbers.
Disclaimer: Not a fan of Katrina.😆

It's not a question of being trained in ballet or bharatanatyam or hip hop or jazz, it is that there is an inherent difference in the body language and grace of someone who dances after years of training and someone who is untrained but a natural dancer. Look at the difference between Dola Re and Pinga, it is glaringly obvious between the two. Same like the difference between a trained singer and one who has a good voice but not trained.

As for Kat, she is a good dancer but it is not consistent. Chikni Chameli good, in Kamli bad, her movements were stiff and jerky not fluid. Few can be fluid dancers like Sridevi who are not trained in dance.

Knowing traditional dance is not parameter of a good dancer. But the things knowing traditional dance naturally brings to an actress, in performances makes them good dancer and above others. Western dances are difficult yes, agree. But a traditional dancer can learn them anytime, in few years or maybe 2-5 years. But traditional dances, need years of learning for expertise. They focus on the minutest of things and their form is quite different from western ones. they need emoting on words, from face, expressing through mudras, every movement. The finesse, grace a traditional dancer's body has, others lack in this. Of course, I believe every thing has exceptions. very few maybe like Sridevi, who maybe better even today than today's actresses. Katrina maybe known down the years and even now for her dance numbers; but she still has her limitations.

I wouldn't put down actresses like Aish, Kareena, Priyanka and Katrina unless someone can give me a side by side comparison on similar steps. To me it's weird to compare Sridevi's tandav dance to anything in present day when no actress in this generation has been given something like this. Most of the dancers that have been praised so far were praised for classical, semi classical, or cabaret inspired dance. We don't do those anymore. Our dances tend to be inspired by hip hop these days. So I can't say our current lot is not as good as the actresses that have been mentioned.

I would say back in the days it seemed like actresses danced with their heart and they danced freely. Most current actresses lack that love for dance on their faces

So, if some people choose to name only current actresses; others can also say forum has habit of forgetting gems of past who are still better in every way from today's so-called dancers. Everyone has right to voice their choice. Its not necessary everyone likes, chooses "dancers" of today; and its not necessary others like, remember or even know about gem-dancers of past. No one in current generation has been given such dances because first, we don't have that kind of versatile choreographers. Focus is only on western dances. Second, like it or not, they simply lack the capability to execute those in right form. Something will always be amiss, classical dances are not learnt in a day. They need mastering expressions, mudras, grace, movements, body for years and even if these actresses perform such dances. Difference in grace finesse will always be seen.

One can always write down their choices, even only current actresses. But do not question others choices.
