Other than Arijit, Armaan, Neha and Neeti Mohan, it seems that very few singers have been able to establish themselves.
Badhshah and Honey Singh are also established but they first became popular by releasing their own albums. Armaan also to a great extent found fame this way.

I don't know how I feel about this whole situation. I do want to say once again that there is no right or wrong way, things are just different. Our generation cries thinking about the 90s while I know older generations called 90s crap and felt nostalgic over older times.

^^ But many people who are fans of the 1990s/early to mid 2000s are also fans of previous eras. Some are fans of Kishore Kumar, while others like Rafi's songs a lot. So it's not just about liking the music of the era you grew up in.

He's so right on many levels.
I just feel bad that the times have come to be like this.. Neither is there a solid talent in music composing, nor are there singers who 'wow' us anymore..

Music composers are never given their due, or credits, unless the song was something exceptional, and except A R Rahman and Ilayaraja whose composition itself has their name written all over it. Even now, I barely know who's composing what and even if I look up it's forgettable because no one leaves an impression.. it's a rarity in today's music. Same with singers, a rarity when a voice makes us go 'wow' ...heck, sometimes I feel the music produced today has just become a background noise when I play it.

It's not nostalgia exactly, while there IS indeed some nostalgia associated with 90s, but.. I and many members on IF love and enjoy music since the 40s, and I'm pretty much open as far as I know myself, I try to be open too - because I don't care what language a song is, or even if it's an instrumental, it doesn't matter as long as it pleases the ears/heart. Heck, I even enjoy some silly covers or renditions, I enjoy many songs when they are just *new*, but do they stay with me or keep calling me back like 40s song does? No... sadly, atleast not yet.

I really hope it's just a dry phase the world music is going through, it's no wonder that English music is bringing back the 80s in it's music, and there is an entire genre of retro-wave. And, even in BW, the remaking is reflecting on the fact that music and creativity that is not satisfactory. Even ARR's quality of music has been dipping since 2010s.. there's a universal curse I guess

Also, lyrics in these new songs are no getting no better either - in Hindi, english(worse).. In telugu, there are a few songs in recent times with very good lyrics - surprisingly good lyrics, that is the only new strange difference I am noticing among the different languages I am listening to..

@ALD absolutely spot on! It's really not so much about nostalgia as it is about the other factors that you have mentioned.
@Djoker Has Anu Malik really started calling every performance terrific? 😆 I only watched him on that show ages ago in a previous season, and he used to be very nasty at that time!
