I saw this interview on Twitter and I realised that I had interpreted and understood Maya the same way Jenny was talking of her. In that moment I realised I had definitely read her right. She DID want to change. But people's lack of acceptance means she has NO motivation to change! She becomes demotivated and goes back to being the way she was before.
After her marriage she has been either rejected or betrayed by the people closest to her. Vandana, Arjun and then Saanjh. Jennifer was right. Maya doesn't go out looking for trouble. Neither is she mean to people if they don't cross her. If they are nasty to her she is nasty back. Or she does it in such a way, that no one even knows sometimes what she is doing or did!
Does this prove she is not capable of killing? I don't think so. I think Jennifer's admiration for the character is for her attitude, her bad ass qualities of never suffering fools gladly or taking her insult lying down. How she played her Mom in law when she refused to accept her. "You didn't want to see the nice side of me? Well I will show you the bad side of me!" She DID warn Vandana to not cross her, coz she won't like the result. But Vandy mama just invited trouble for herself. If she understood Maya as well as she says she does, she would have realised she was playing right into her hands with her attitude.
I think Maya is kick ass too, and I think more women like her are needed on Indian TV especially where Goody two shoes and Mahantha even at the expense of your self worth is celebrated!
